Lyra's P.O.V
The late afternoon sun bore through the windows, lighting up the shop, at the same time heating up the room. It was just a normal day at the bookshop, where everything was perfectly perfect. If that made any sense.
Beads of sweat rolled down my back as I tiredly placed back the books in the shelf, feeling my shirt clinging on to me like glue. I let out an annoyed sigh, fanning myself before I dusted my hands together, seeing little molecules of dust fly into the air and smiled. At least I was done.
I took a quick peek at the clock, noticing it was already 3 with only a few customers coming in to browse around. Weird, I thought, for normally the bookstore would have been filled by now. But I pushed it aside, and focused on the book cart in front of me and pushed it back to its original place. Seeing as if I had nothing to do, I headed towards to the cashier before completely propping myself on it, and groaned. My back was killing me.
At the same moment, I heard the bell at the door rang, making me sprung up from my seat, greeting the mysterious customer with a smile. But it faded away after a way too familiar messy brown hair came into view, turning it into a scowl.
"Cole." I deadpanned, propping back down in my seat.
"Oh come on, what's with the bored expression? You should be glad I'm here." Cole feigned a hurt look, before heading over to the cashier to give me a ruffle on the head, which I hate.
"Well I'm not." I stuck my tongue out at him, looking away.
He scoffed at my reaction, before completely ignoring our little fight and moved onto another topic.
"Anyways, about that....."
I was barely listening to him, as the words soon drowned making me solemnly focus on his lips which were moving in silence. It was weird on how I acted around Cole, seeing that he was always visiting me every now and then. But then again, it wasn't a surprise because I had a crush on him since 9th grade when I first saw him in my freshman year.
"Earth to Lyra? You there?" A hand suddenly appeared in front of my face, waving as it did. I immediately snapped out of it, before adjusting my view to see Cole right in front of me. An alarm went up in my head, making me blush as I slipped off my chair with a loud crash.
"Shit...." I whimpered in pain as he came over to help me up, laughing as he did.
"Shut up Cole." I glared at him in dismay, checking myself for any bruises
He chuckled at my response, his hand grabbing my arm as he heaved me up.
"Fine, but what's wrong with you?" He asked, a query look on his face.
"I'm just tired." I lied, which obviously didn't work as he raised an eyebrow, his arms crossing.
"Ok, fine," I raised my hand in defense.
" Maybe I'm just getting stressed out about mom's health and our family's financial situation." I finally admitted, giving him a sheepish look though my eyes gave off a tired look.
Cole remained silent, before giving me a small understanding smile.
"Come here" He murmured.
