it had been a few weeks since that day at the training center and it had been a few days since the individual evaluation, winter had gotten better at knife throwing and hand-to-hand combat. she had almost perfected both skills and then the day came. she woke up after an uneasy night of sleeping to the day where she was going to be sent into the games.

minty had woken her up and pulled her out of bed. breakfast was quiet, craig nor minty nor mason having anything to say. what could they say? there was nothing that could remove the unsettling feeling in the room and they all knew it.

once breakfast was done, craig pulled both mason and winter to the side. "you both are gonna do well in the game, alright? you're scores said that. winter, you're speedy, try run to the cornucopia but be fast. as soon as the other tributes get there it's a bloody blood bath. you don't need bags but they are helpful. now you gotta go." winter pulled craig into a tight hug, then she hugged mason and then she hugged minty. this could be the last time she would see them and she wanted them to know she cared for all of them one last time.

afterwards, both tributes were sent to their stylists. winter walked into a room and saw alexsy standing beside a table with clothing laying on top. there was a black long sleeved t-shirt, dark green cargo pants and black military boots. winter was right. this was what they were going to wear in the arena. there was also a dark green jacket to complete the look. winter's hair was tied into a pony tail and her clothes were placed on her body.

alexsy grasped winter by the shoulders and looked into her eyes. "you're going to do well. you're fast, you're quick. you'll get to the cornucopia before the other tributes i'm telling you. grab the weapons you need, your knives and  back pack but i have no idea what the arena is going to be this year, i can't guess. we've never had this outfit before."

"what about mason and aster, i need to grab things for them too." winter said as she looked into alexsy's deep brown eyes.

"right, grab a spear for mason and an axe for aster, alright? that's what they fight with." alexsy took a deep breath. "you're gonna survive this, winter, i know it."

"i'm gonna try." the brunette responded.

"all tributes must be in transportation tubes." a robotic voice called out as alexsy pulled winter into a tight hug, one last hug before she was sent into the games.

winter pulled away from the hug reluctantly and stepped into the tube, her breath getting caught in her throat as she moved upwards, alexsy disappear as the bright sun of the arena shun in her face. she looked around, her eyes spotted aster but she couldn't see mason. he was probably on the other side of the arena, on the other side of the cornucopia.

winter took a deep breath and got into a running stance, ready to run when the games started.  she looked around the arena, it looked like a fallen city of concrete buildings. mossy green was seen though out and broken glass. the arena this year was a fallen city. winter brought her attention back to the numbers which were dwindling fast.

then it happened. the buzzer went off the and the hunger games officially began. winter wasted no time and broke into a sprint towards the cornucopia much like the other tributes. she managed to get there seemingly first and didn't waste time.

she grabbed a backpack and slug it around her shoulders, she grasped a bag like thing of knifes, a spear and an axe, she looked around, some of the tributes weren't even half way. she ran towards the moss covered buildings, almost running into another tribute but she threw a knife at him, the knife digging into his chest, killing him instantly. a canon went off.

"i'm so sorry." she spoke softly as she quickly pulled the knife out. she dashed behind a fallen building, continuing to run until she felt she was far enough. she climbed inside the broken window of a fallen building, into a dark corner. tears sprung in her eyes. she had just killed someone. she gripped the weapons in her hands tightly as she cried silently. if this was the guilt she was going to feel through out her time in the game, she wanted out and fast.

winter stopped her crying and kept very quiet when she heard foot steps. there were no voices just very quiet foot steps. winter gripped her already bloody knife and watched as a face came into view. aster.

she let out a sigh in relief and jumped out. both mason and aster had backpacks but no weapons. they both turned to see winter and hugged her.

"you killed one of the careers, hunter greene district one." aster said as she grabbed the axe when she pulled away from the hug.

mason gripped the spear in his hand as he looked around. "why did they choose this as the arena?"

winter shrugged. "hell if i know." her voice was eerily calm. she had to harden up if she was going to survive the games, she knew that. mason and aster both looked alarmed but knew no one could be the same after taking a life, not even a career. "are the career's after us now?"

"well, you. you killed one of them and the fact that you got an eleven makes you a threat. but nothing's gonna happen to you, win. i'm sure of it." aster said as she ran her hand through her dark afro.

mason nodded. "yeah but they're also after you too aster, all three of us. we all got high scores. we're all threats to them."

"and they're threats to us." winter said as she walked forward. "this is the hunger games, we're all a threat to each other but i won't be the one to kill either of you. i don't know about you guys but betrayal isn't my thing." mason huffed with laughter as aster smiled.

then it went quiet as four canons went off, one after the other.

"five tributes down, nineteen more to go."
