"Maggy, I give full condolences to you for the loss of your parents."
"Thank you, Gabriel."
A month after the death of my parents, their funeral was held.
It took a lot to organize the thing. Many celebrities were horrified and many contractors. Distant family, that I didn't even know I had, called up and asked if I had someone to stay with. I answered yes. And explained my situation with Alexandru. At first my family wasn't so keen on the idea but they soon agreed with it, knowing that I would get a full education and be supported by someone else in life than them. I had received everything in my parents Will which was a lot of mullah. I knew that distant cousins just wanted a part of that. They didn't care for my wellbeing. Alexandru did. A complete stranger that I have only known for a month. But he's a lonely man who needs to be loved. I'm pretty lonely myself, and I need love too if I am to be human in this world. All living things need to be loved.
The funeral was held in Alexandru's own cemetery, in his backyard. The reception was held in the castle, only on the base floor.
Some celebrities that I had no interest in came and a few family members that were supposedly very close to my parents. Gabriel insisted on coming to support me and show his care. It's very nice of him to come. He's the only friend that I've been able to make while living here.
Alexandru to the family was just another famous person who worked with my parents. They were very impressed with the castle and his status as a count.
After being bombarded with guests, Gabriel was finally able to talk with me.
"How did they die again?" He asked. He waved his hands in the air and tried to rephrase his words. "That's not what I meant, sorry. I'm not used to this whole...funeral thing. I haven't had the chance to experience any death in my family." I giggled and was not offended by his question.
"It's okay, I'm not exactly used to this either." I said back. Suddenly a scene of Alexandru killing humans flashed through my mind. I swallowed hard, reminding myself that I have experienced the feeling of "death", or at least just watching it happen and feeling remorse for the lost souls.
"Maggy, are you OK?" Gabriel put his hand on my shoulder, as I looked down at my black flats. Suddenly, his hand was lifted off my shoulder, only to be replaced with an icy cinch.
"Gabriel, it's very nice of you to make it. I'm sure Maggy is very glad." The Count's stern voice came from behind me.
"Pourquoi devez-vous être si persistant sur moi ne pas être ici?" Gabriel spoke in French I could tell, and he wasn't happy as he glared at Alexandru.
"Je n'ai pas dit que je voulais que tu partes." The count knew the tongue and spoke it fluently. I wish they would just speak in English. This would always happen whenever Octavian came over. Him and Alexandru talking back and forth in Romanian or even other languages.
"Aw mais je sais mieux, salaud. Je ne peux pas te faire confiance avec la vie de cette fille innocente." Gabriel spoke, invisible steam coming from his nose and ears. I looked up at Alexandru and he smiled, then spoke.
"J'ai déjà signé tous les documents légaux en tant que son tuteur légal. Et elle est entre de très bonnes mains, petit garçon." I knew "petit garçon" was little boy. Alexandru called Gabriel a little boy. I wonder what they're talking about... Alexandru then pulled me closer to him. Making me feel very nervous being so close to him in the way I was. "Elle est à moi, Gabriel. Et d'ailleurs, je pense qu'elle aime ça ici avec moi." He said. Gabriel huffed in frustration.
"Good day Maggy, if you need anything—know that you can always come to me if need be." He glared daggers at the Count then turned on his heel and left out the doors.
I was a bit mad. Why does the electricity always have to be so strong around the two? I turned to Alexandru with a frown.
"What?" He asked.
I removed myself from being at his side and stood in front of him with folded arms. "You did it again!"
"What? Put that little rascal in his place?"
"Is that what that was?" Alexandru just laughed.
"That boy takes everything so seriously."
"Does he know that you're a ... you know."
"No, he doesn't, but he knows my family history better than anyone. He believes the tails of vampires still living in Transylvania." I began to mess with the black silk of my dress.
After all the guests were gone, Alexandru had a little surprise for me.
"Maggy, would you like to go to the beach?"
"What, now? But it's dark out. And isn't the beach closed at this time of day?"
"Not for me it's not." Alexandru seemed excited. I guessed that he probably hadn't been to the beach during the day since he was a child. I bet he doesn't even get out of the town or even castle much.
"Well, I don't have a swim suit ... ."
"You don't need one," Alexandru swooped me up into his arms by surprise. I was speechless as he ran out the doors. I felt force come from one of his legs like he was jumping over something. But his leg muscles were much stronger. My breath was taken from me as I looked down at the distant ground. The air was chilly making me wish I had a jacket on. I wanted to hide my face in Alexandru's chest to block the strong wind but the scenery was too magnificent. I had seen impressive sites before but this was stunning.
The woods surrounding the castle were silver. The moon shone large and bright in the night, lighting up the clouds. Making them outlined with gold. The village below was glittering. The distant mountains were sky-liners. Fog covered the ground, making me feel like I was in the clouds.
I felt like I was truly in a story or movie about monsters. A painting of a creepy scene that an artist imaginarily drew.
My heart stopped as the butterflies began to flap around in my stomach. We were no longer going up, but down. A yelp escaped my mouth and I could hear a faint chuckle from the vampire. A utility pole was coming up, and had I thought Alexandru was going to try to balance on it I would have had to demand he not take me. But I didn't know and he did take me into the clouds. He stepped onto the top of the pole making me now put my face in his chest. I don't know why I'm scared now! I was just 600 feet in the air! How is this different?
I guess I'm scared that Alexandru is going to lose his balance and fall. But he's a vampire! He can't die! And he wouldn't let me die ... .
"Are you scared?" I jerked a little bit in Alexandru's arms as he asked the question because of how quiet he had been. I went to speak but my mouth was dry and a croak made its way through the air. "Oh, sorry I should have told you to keep your mouth shut." He looked out around him and I did too. We were no longer near the town Brasov. I don't actually know where we are. But it looked like we had traveled miles in just seconds.
"Did you just freeze time?" I asked eagerly and with a rusty throat.
Alexandru smirked, making my heart race at how handsome he was, and then answered with a 'yes'.
I looked back out at the world and lost my stomach when Alexandru lurched into the air without warning.
We flew like this for half an hour. I was able to see one-fifth of Romania in just that amount of time. I finally felt footsteps coming from Alexandru, and once he nudged me awake, I realized where we were, finally.
