Chrissy, Aaron and I all are heavy mover in our sleep. It wasn't a surprise to see Chrissy had rolled off the bed and was sprawled out on the ground, Aaron was stretched out on my bed taking up almost all of the room, and I was laying diagonal on the bed on top of Aaron. All of us slowly started waking up at the same time. Then we all smelled it. A delicious smelling breakfast scent was making its way upstairs. It caught us off guard because I was the only one in this house who ever cooked. Curious, we made out way down the stairs. What we saw was a huge shock. My mom was out of bed making eggs, French toast, and bacon.
You're probably wondering what makes that so weird. What's wrong with a mom making breakfast? Well, since what happened to my dad around a year before then, my mom only left her bed to go to work. She used to be the picture perfect mom; making us breakfast everyday, giving us advice, taking us out to do fun things. It was rare for her to tell me goodnight before I fell asleep, something she used to do everyday. I tried not to blame here. She took the loss of my dad hard, really hard. They had been bestfriends since they were five, and started dating their freshman year of high school. They were the perfect couple, barley ever fought, loved each other unconditionally. So it was really shocking to see her up with a smile on her face making a huge breakfast.
My dad passed away last summer. He had been a smoker since he was in his teens. That wasn't weird for people his age to be doing back then. He didn't know it then, but the cigarettes were slowly breaking down his heart. When he was 29 he had his first heart attack. The doctors went in to do open heart surgery, but before they did the told us there was almost no way he would live. I was only three at the time but Jordan and my mom told me about how they called him their miracle patient. Dad quit smoking and things seemed to be getting better, though he was still pretty weak. Twelve years later he had another heart attack. They tried to perform another open heart surgery, but this time his heart was already to weak. It completely quit pumping blood during the operation. Out whole family was devistated. He was the perfect dad to Jordan and me. My mom took it the hardest though. While we began to function like we always had, my mom slowly started shutting down. This was the best she had looked since before everything happened.
"Two over easy?" Mom asked me. She'd remembered just how I liked my eggs.
"Of course." I smiled at her. She made everyone's breakfast just how they liked them too. Even made veggie bacon for Chrissy. Aaron and Chrissy were like her other children, since they were at our house so much. We quickly devoured the delicious breakfast. Chrissy had to go home soon after breakfast.
"Oh, can someone give me a ride? My car is still at home." I was surprised to see Jordan hop up and offer her one. They left and my mom gave me a weird look.
"I thought they were always fighting?" Mom asked.
"Yeah, they've been acting weird lately." It was true. For the last couple of months, they hadn't been terrorizing each other. I guess they were just both maturing or something.
"Hey, it's Saturday isn't it?" Aaron asked. I nodded a yes and he said, "Then let's go on a run." We had been going on Saturday runs every summer since 5th grade. There was a path we always went on through the woods that led to a small playground. There was a basketball court that we'd always stop to shoot around on. Aaron, who already had on his tennis shoes said, "I'll wait outside." I went upstairs to get my shoes when I felt a tug on my arm.
"Hey, can I ask you something?" Ronnie asked. I nodded in response and he said, "Can I take you out on a date?"
"I don't know. I really don't want Aaron finding out. We just made up and I hate fighting with him."
"Don't worry, I figured you say that. There is a carnival going on two towns over. No one from around here should be there. It will be fun, I promise." I heard the door open, which had to be Aaron, so I quickly said yes feeling rushed. "Pick you up at 7?" He asked. I nodded quickly and we went our separate ways. When I was in my room I heard the door open.
