Sorry this is so short! Chapter two should come soon.

I only ever saw her at night. She was small, but my age, with bright sunny hair and dazzling green eyes. Sometimes when I stayed at Kota I'd see her, always in a t-shirt and jeans, and I'd wonder about who she was and where she lived.

Some nights, like tonight, I stayed at Kota's just to see her. It was slightly stalkerish, I know, but I was curious. I wanted to talk to her but anytime I tried she'd see me and run, completely disappearing into the shadows of the woods. I couldn't even pick out a silhouette when she did.

I had started to think of her as a ghost.

That's why I was here, on Sunnyvale Court, at midnight. I had school in a few hours, but I was desperate for another glimpse at this ghost girl. I thought maybe if I could find some evidence of her existence Kota would stop calling me crazy, and I could get Nathan or Gabriel to go ghost hunting with me.

I stopped in front of Kota's house, surveying the quiet street. All of the houses were dark, still, making the night feel lonely and cold. At one end of the street, even the streetlights were out. They were in front of the gray, two-story house belonging to Kota's new neighbors- who I'd yet to investigate. They never really left the house and didn't seem very interesting, so I didn't see any reason to.

The ghost girl was nowhere to be seen. Was she hiding? Maybe she just wasn't out tonight. Whatever. Even if she wasn't here, I was in the mood for a spooky adventure.

With that in mind, I sought out the darkest, creepiest place I could. If there was anywhere a ghost would hide, it was the woods.

To my utter disappointment, the woods were ghost free. As hard as I tried to let my imagination run away with me and to make an adventure out of it, my thoughts kept returning to the mysterious girl. As cool as it would be if she was a ghost I didn't think it was credible. Ghosts were supposed to be pale and creepy- an image she didn't exactly fit.

I yawned, starting back towards Sunnyvale Court. It was time to give up for tonight, but I wasn't too disheartened. I'd be out here again before long.

In minutes, I found myself directly behind the new neighbor's house. Despite it being one in the morning, I wasn't alone. The ghost girl was here.

I watched as she slowly opened the back door, freezing at the slightest sound. Was she breaking in? Couldn't ghosts just walk through walls? Maybe I was watching how she died. Ghosts showed you that kind of stuff, right? I had to smother a snort at the strange train of thought.

As the girl disappeared through the door, I crept silently across the yard, speeding up as the door began to swing shut. I managed to prop it open with my foot to follow the girl in. If Kota or Mr. Blackbourne found out I'd be in big trouble, but my curiosity had been piqued. What reason did the girl have for breaking in?

I shut the door quietly behind me, glancing around the dark room as I gave my eyes a moment to adjust.

The door had led into a kitchen, the sink piled full of dirty dishes, the counters mostly barren. It was hard to tell without light, but it looked old and grimy as if in the month people have lived here it had never been cleaned.

The creak of an old door opening floated to me from another room, and with a final glance around the kitchen, I followed.
