Chapter 6

A week has passed since I heard what our faith would be. Tomorrow he'll be killed. I need to do something.

I haven't seen him in a week because Phill said I wasn't allowed to give him food.

I've seen them going down there more frequently and although it gives me reprieve, I worry about the torture they're putting him through.

I know I couldn't run from here but he's a lot faster and can run on four legs. I'm starting to think that he'll get away. I hope he does.

So, that is why when Phill started snoring I got up and made my way downstairs. Sliding down the stairs on my bum. Hoping that I wouldn't make a sound.

Once I was at the bottom of the steps I headed towards the kitchen. Taking the keys carefully down and turning to unlock the door after turning on the kitchen light. I slid down the basement steps, being careful not to fall or make a sound.

When I reached the bottom I started to hobble over to where the silohuette of a young man stood, waiting to greet me.

When I reached him I didn't hesitate for even a second and started undoing the chains. I felt his body against mine. Heard as he burried his face in my neck and sniff.

My heartbeat became fast, my breathing hitched a little but I kept to the task at hand. When I heard the final shackle hit the ground I immediately took his hand and tugged trying to get him to the door.

Before I could take another step a hand circled my waist elleviating the weight from my broken leg. I leaned against feeling exhausted from my lack of sleep and from the hard week of labour. I hadn't slept much worrying about him. It also seemed that my leg had gotten worse, it was now swollen and a horrible looking black and blue bruise surrounded the area of the enitial break. I couldn't walk on it at all, but I tryed to force myself to, otherwise that wouldn't be the only nasty looking bruise.

As we approached the stairs I felt the boy at my side start to tense. When we reached the bottom of the basement steps he stopped and looked up into the kitchen in awe.

I hated to have to rush him but we had to hurry. "Go, you go, hurry, fast." I say trying to let him understand that he has to hurry. That he has to put as much distance between this house and him before daybreak.

We head up the stairs to the kitchen, he seems to be trying to move as fast as he can and take in everything at the same time.

We reach the front door and I unlock it. I let go of him and he walks out a few steps looking in awe at the sky and his new surroundings. I close the door behind me and step forward trying to get his attention.

He turns to me. "Run as fast as you can for as long as you can, ok?" I say hoping he'll catch on to what I'm saying. "Escape, go, leave." I whisper yell making shooing gestures with my hands.

He turns to leave and a selfish part in me is sad to see him go, but this way he'll be free.

After a second he turns and sees me standing there. He comes back and looks at me, confusion in his eyes.

"Go, hurry." I say, shooing him again.

"You go." He says, concern in his eyes.

"Hurt leg." I say pointing to my leg. "No run."

I think I saw hurt in his eyes but I brushed it off quickly.

"You go." He said turning his back to me. I was about to protest when he began pointing to his back and saying: "You me back."

He changed and a huge goldy brown wolf turned it's head and barked softly, he towered over me, but I wasn't afraid.

"No, I'll slow down. Leave before it's too late." I say looking back at the house, worried in case someone had gotten.

He barked softly as if whispering. I was panicked. Why wasn't he leaving? Did he want me leave with him because he cared?

Because he needed someone to help him get around? Yeah that was probably it.

These thoughts zoomed around in my head, and it only took a moment to come to that realisation.

As I walked towards the wolf who was laying down, showing me his side. I went to him and climbed onto his back.

The last thought I had before he sped off into the trees was of my stupidity and my total lack of concern towards him.

I can't believe I was going to just shoo him into the forest when he didn't know what anything was, he wouldn't have even known what was edible and what wasn't.
