Splinters of Memory

"I won't have to pay for this, will I" all I do is watch as the pieces of my spinal guard being held by Coco, just fall to the ground. I feel my eyes begin to well with tears, I try my hardest to keep them back but one or two escape. They have barely left my eye when I hear "are you okay Y/N" Ruby said as she kneels beside me as I sit with my back against the wall, "yeah I'm alright," I say as I quickly wipe my eyes and sniffle a little, "just a bit shook up that's all."

Ruby looks to Coco with Glinda as they try to put it back together but it doesn't seem to be working, "but what about your thing, Cardin took it when you left, I did try to get it back for you but he-" "sorry, Ruby" I say as I force myself to my feet everywhere feels swollen and stiff, just like back in the emerald forest, "I'll see you later yeah?" I start to stumble my way down the hall, I get to the to the corner when Ruby calls out "I'll bring you, your guard spine, thing? when they fix it!" she says, I keep walking.

I manage to get to my floor and start walking down the hall, the sound of people talking, arguing and laughing fills the hall. I even hair team RWBY and team JNPR. They both seem to be in RWBY's room "and you're sure this is safe?" Jaune says from inside the room "Yeah, I'm mostly sure" Yang replies, suddenly a loud crash comes from inside the room followed swiftly by a thud and a cry of pain, "I thought you said it was safe" Jaune says in agonising pain "I said mostly" laughter spills out from under the door "I cant bleve I slept underneath that deathtrap" is the last thing I hear coming from Weiss as I head for my room.

It's quiet as I close the door behind me on what has been a short but painful expedition. I go to my window, looking out I can't see the sun, must be at its peak. I too sore to do anything so, I think I might just have a nap, only a little one.

Laying on top of my sheets I close my eyes and begin to drift off.

"I told you to watch your back, it might be strong but it's important," she says as I pick myself up from the durt "I know mom," I say as I begin dusting myself off "one more," she says as I ready myself, "ready?" I don't get to answer before we lock blades again, her initial attack was fine, just both swords in an overhead slash, all I had to is crossguard and push her back. She looks at me for a second then darts to the side looking to circle around me. I copy her movements as we run around in a circle, ending up where the other had started, "she must be testing my footwork" I think to myself.
She gives me a second then strikes with her swords, left, right, left and another left, then right, I struggle to keep up with.
The constant clashing of swords echoes around us "she not holding back" I think to myself as I block and dodge her attacks that are sure to take me out in one hit. "Come on I expect you to be ready for this" she says catching my shirt, her blade cuting right through it "I could be if you were around more" suddenly, almost instantly she spins around behind me and slams the hilt of her blade into my back knocking me to the grownd... again "you now I have to go Y/N" she says puting her swords away, "of corse I know, just stating a fact" I said as I pick myself up and dust myself off ...again "anyway I'm off okay, I should be back in two weeks," she says picking up he bag she left at the front door ready for when she finished training me. "So expect to see you in three weeks," I say, she's always a week late "well if I didn't spend the extra week I wouldn't have this for you," she says as he rests her bag on the floor and starts to go through it. I walk over interested in what she had said "here it is" she says pulling out a long ornate box and hands it to me. The box has a white lid I can make out a few companies logos on it, even the Schnee dust company, it has to be Atlas, I pull the lid off and look inside.
Looking back me is a shiny metal spine "I always told you to watch your back, this should help" I run my hand down the metal spine "I pulled a cup of favours with some people I know in atlas" well that expanse how she could afford it "it's got a hole bunch of atlas technology in there, mainly stuff that will soften an impact" I look back at her "I guess you off then, huh?" she looks at me a slightly sad expression on her face "yep, nothing let to do but say goodbye" I hug her before she turns and starts to leave "hey, mom" I say "yes?" "Thank you for everything, I'll see you soon." I say "goodbye Y/N," she says as she walks away.
I sit and stare at my new gift as the birds sing their songs around the forest,
"I miss you mom"
I wake up the chilling sadness of the dream I had just had runs through me as I lay there and listen to the sound of birds outside my window, their song is different to the ones at home I wonder how they're doing.
My scroll starts to buzz as I lay in my bed, I take it out from one of the pockets I had left it in and open it. It'd a message from Ozpin "Y/N I would like to see you in my office to discuss the events that have occurred today, please come see me when you are ready" the message stops after that. I wonder what he wants to know? Not like I did anything, I just got punched and then watched them get punched.
I get up and go out on my second exposition of the day but it's darker now than before like a lot darker but not quite sunset.
I walk down the hall and past JNRP and RWBY's rooms and into the elevator to Ozpin's office, the entire ride up I think about the dream I had, well it was more of a memory of when I first got my spinal guard. I really will miss that thing.
The doors of the elevator open to reveal Ozpin sitting in his chair behind his desk "Please come in Y/N" he says as I enter "you seen to be doing well, I know Glinda hasn't needed to shock you in a while now" he says "Yes Professor, but I don't think that's why you called me here" I say, Oz looks at me for a moment, then get up and walks over to me "no, no it is not," he starts to say as he grabs his cane "earlier today, you left Miss Roes to get some water where she was then involved in a small altercation with the members of team CDNL," he stops as he reaches me "am I right so far?" he asks "yes you are" I reply "then when you came back, you let Ruby go get help while you stayed, am I correct in saying this?" Oz says as he looks out the window beside us, I wonder what he's thinking "Yes?" I say "that all I wanted to hear," Oz says as he walks back toward his desk "That's is?" I ask taking a few steps after him "I know what happened Y/N, I just wanted to hear how you have been getting on with your new teams. You must trust Miss Rose a lot to trade places with her" he says "after all there was nothing stopping you from getting help yourself, so you could return to Miss Rose" he says as he takes his seat "on a separate note your equipment that was broken," he says as he pulls out a large black box "according to our school policy Mr Winchester has paid for your new upgrad, we didn't have your older model so this is the newer version" I walk over to the desk to have a look in side the box, it's another spinal guard similar to my one but black and thinner. It sits in the box and looking back at me just like my one did when I first got it. "I'm sorry Professor but I can't expect this" I say taking a step back from the table, it just wouldn't be the same "I thought you would say that and that why I have people working on fixing your guard as we speak" huh, what else would I expect from Oz, he knows what I'm going to say before I even say it. "Thank you Ozpin for everything," I say as start making my way to the elevator "Y/N you for getting your equipment" I turn back to Ozpin to see him standing up with the black box in his hands "I get to keep it? But I'm getting my one back" I say "yes you are, but that doesn't mean that Mr Winchester doesn't have to pay for breaking school rules. Ozpin walks around his table and hands the box to me "and it would be a waste for his payment to go into the school storage" he hand me the box "there are still some things I want to talk about concerning you and your aura but I think they can wait until tomorrow" with that, I call the elevator and head back to my room.
Still aching from my beat down earlier today I collapsed back onto my bed, "I feel like I could sleep for a hundred years" I think to my self as I lay there. I look across my room at the sun rays beaming in through my window, I watch them as they go from there bright yellow light to an amber orange "sunset already? Must have taken a longer nap than I thought" I drag myself from my bed and close the curtains, "I know it's a day off, but I still have some work to do" I look at the pile of books at my desk of work that I need to catch up on, "why didn't they just leave me in that coma" I think as I begin the not very interesting study of dust categorization.
An hour or two goes by when I hear a knock at the door, I'm so tired I practically limp my way to the door, when I open it Yang stands before me. I go to say "oh, Hi Yang what are you doing here" but I my jaw hasn't even moved before I grappled into a hug "thank you for today" she says still squeeze it the life out of me "Ruby really means a lot to me, yuh know" she releases me from the hug, "If you ever need anything just let me know." "Thanks, Yang-" I stop as I notice something about Yang, she's glowing. It a pale, dim yellow light but it's there "Yang are you glowing?" She doesn't say anything, just looks at here hands then look back at me "I'm not the only one" Yang says, she's not wrong as realise I starting to glow two, "are you doing this, because if you are you can stop now" I say examining my hands like any person would when the start to glow "no it's not me, it's just like what happened to Pyrrha and Ruby" Yang says "but somethings different by this point there was a bright beam of-"
Everything goes black.
It's late I wake up to the sound of grim outside my house, but mom was only gone a few hours and what about our defences there no way a grim could have made it here. Grabbing my bow I rush outside ready to confront the beast, besting the door open I scan the area looking for where it is. It's dark but the light of the full moon gives off enough light to see. The moonlight shines on the still, empty training ground. Dust particles dance about where I had my ass handed to me only a few hours ago. Nothing makes a sound, it's off-putting. How I'd it so quiet when I was woken up by the sound of grim. I take a few carefully placed steps away from the safety of home. The night is still, then something makes its move in the bushes. the night air rushes around me, the chill shakes me to my bones. Nocking an arrow I ready myself for the impending battle, then I see it, red eyes staring at me. I run through what I have taught myself "feet shoulder with apart, keep your breathing steady, pull the arrow back to the side of your eye, aim using the very tip of the arrow and RELEASE!" the arrow flys heading straight for its target before...

I jolt awake to find myself lying on the floor surrounded by Yang, Pyrrha, Ruby, and Jaune "what just happened, why am I on the floor?" I say as Pyrrha and Jaune help me to my feet, Yang comes over to me and gives me a solid punch in the arm "you had me worried you jerk" it hurts a lot. "It's not my fault!" I say as she walks away from me down the hall "where are you going!?" I call out after her "to bed it's like, two in the morning" Yang call back down the hall "Yeah and some people are trying to sleep!" someone shouts out from inside there room "sorry!" Pyrrha says to the person behind the door "we should probably talk later" Pyrrha says to me as she offers me a hand up of the floor "are you okay by yourself" Jaune says "yeah. Actually, I feel great apart from the bruise Yang gave me" I say "well goodnight then, Y/N" he says giving a small wave with Pyrrha following "goodnight" I say, then I return to my room.

Back in my lonely room, I try to get some shut eye before the sun comes up. I don't get any, eventually, I give up and get out of being. "I've been unconscious enough today,"I think to my self as I head out on some kind of walk.
