I've read books where the author talks about a blissful moment when you wake up and you don't remember anything of the night before. I've never experianced this; as soon as a ear drum shattering wail woke me up from my sleep, I immediately knew that it was Rose who was sleeping at the foot of my bed.
Unlike last night when Vic had slept over and had helped me with Rose at her one in the morning fussiness, I was alone. I jumped out of bed and quickly picked her up, hoping to quiet her down before she could wake up the twins. She immediately quieted down when I grabbed a prepared bottle of formula and suckled on it, her brown eyes holding mine as she ate.
I sat on the edge of the bed and yawned, wishing that Vic was here again. He'd been such a great help last night, even going as far as to get up before me and change her diaper. I didn't mind at all and he seemed to enjoy it - to an extent. Watching Vic handle Rose was comical yet heart warming, he made the funniest comments yet managed to make the cutest remarks about her small face. I had no doubt in my mind that he would be a great father one day.
Rose finished her bottle in record time so I moved her to pat her on the back and praying that tonight would be a quick burp. I was desperately tired after today; Vic had left at ten after breakfeast and the twins had been nonstop balls of energy. It was a wonder Morgan managed to parent them by herself since she had a very short temper, and even I was beginning to get frustrated when Nick had gotten into my make up and drew on my wall. Thankfully it was just eyeliner and easy to wash off.
After Rose was situated, I climbed back into bed and snuggled into my covers, but only for maybe ten minutes before she was crying again.
...
"Have fun?" Andy asked maliciously when he came by on Sunday afternoon to pick up his children.
I sighed in relief from my position on the couch, Nick and Ben curled up on either side of me as Rose rolled around on the floor. The kids screamed when they saw the giant and raced for him, and I felt some feeling return to my arms. Andy told me about his weekend as I helped gather up their things and he seemed less stressed than the last time I had seen him. The kids could tell too, already begging to go out and do something with their mom and to take Rose swimming. I snorted when Andy said maybe and quickly ushered them out of my apartment, shouting a thank you behind him.
I groaned as I laid on my couch, happy to have a moment of peace and not worry about crying children. I even got a four hour nap in - which was disrupted by Vic calling me.
"What's up?" I asked, rolling onto my back and kicking at a pillow that was annoying me. How'd that even get out here?
"Nothing much, just bored. Mind hanging out?" He suggested.
"Sure, come on over. I am not in the mood to get off the couch."
"Beautiful, Kayla," He chuckled. "Want some tacos?"
"Sure, why not."
True to his word, Vic showed up twenty minutes later with Taco Bell. He layed out the food on my coffee table and curled up with me on the couch, both of us gorging ourselves on the junk.
"I am such a bad choreographer for letting you eat this." I sighed in resignation.
"Just let it happen, Winters. Let it go."
I snorted and shoved him in the shoulder. His smile was so big that his eyes crinkled and when he threw his head back, his beanie fell off. I couldn't look away from this happy person, just wanting to bathe in the feeling he was emitting. Sadly, I quickly turned away when he caught me starring. Thankfully he didn't say anything but we both fell quiet.
Vic was tossing our garbage when the doorbell rang. I didn't bother to look through the peep hole and yanked the door open, my smile disapearing when I saw Desiree and Thom standing there. Thom atleast had the audacity to look slightly ashamed while Desiree smiled happily like she hadn't been smoking weed in my house last week.
"Hey, Kayla! You busy?" She chirped.
"Yes, very." I stated dryly, already moving to slam the door shut in her two timing face.
"Wait, Kayla," Thom placed his hand on the door so I couldn't close it. I glared haughtily at him. "We just wanted to give you the invite."
"Kayla, is there a problem?" Vic was suddenly behind me, his chest touching my back as he eyed the two in suspicion.
Immediately Thom was eyeing up Vic and Desiree's smile slightly faltered. What was she thinking? Was she imaging ripping Vic's clothes off like she had done to my ex? At the mere thought I put a possesive hand on Vic's forearm; he didn't seem to mind at all.
"No, they were just leaving." I snapped at the two.
"Wait, who's this? Are you dating Kayla?" Thom intercepted, turning to face Vic.
"I don't see how it concerns you." Vic drawled.
"She's my sister, of course it fucking does." Thom sneered.
Vic blinked in shock but other than that didn't move from behind me. He obviously could tell that even though he was my brother, he was not welcomed.
"Just leave, Thom." I sighed.
Thom opened his mouth to object and his body was tensed to fight. The last thing I wanted was for him to attack Vic, the only good thing that has happened to me since that bitch's betrayal. As if sensing that I was thinking about her, Desiree stepped forward and held out a white envelope to me. I didn't reach for it.
"It's our wedding invitation. You're family, Kayla, and you need to come no matter what. It would mean a lot to us." She said, waving it in front of me like it was a lottery ticket and I should be leaping to get a hold of it.
"Were you thinking of family when you fucked my boyfriend?" I asked innocently, taking the envelope and hoping that she'd just fucking leave already.
"Kayla! Just fucking drop it, it's in past!" Thom suddenly bellowed, his face turning a hideous red.
I stared at him in shock and Desiree eyed him nervously. Vic tensed from behind me, his hand resting on my hip and ready to pull be back if needed. Thom took a deep breaths before opening his eyes and looking straight at me.
"Just be there, Kayla." He grounded out between clenched teeth before grabbing Desiree by the arm and literally dragging her away.
I stood there for a second longer before Vic tugged me softly inside and closed the door behind me. I opened the envelope and read the invite. If anything to go by, Desiree's family was paying for probably the whole wedding since Thom was broke as shit and Desiree's only income was from the shows she danced for.
"So, that happened." Vic said awkwardly, leaning agianst my kitchen counter.
"Sorry you had to see that. I actually wanted to keep you from my psycho family." I laughed, tossing the invite onto the table.
He opened his arms, "Need a hug?"
"Please."
I felt like a small child as I curled into his hold, grasping onto his teeshirt and hoping that all this pain would go away. Thom was my brother, no matter how fucked up he was, so shouldn't he be siding with me with all this drama? Why was she still with Desiree? She obviously didn't love him if she was cheating on him. I didn't understand anything and I felt like a niave nineteen year old again facing the real world.
"Let's go lay down." Vic suggested and led me towards my bedroom.
We curled up on top of the covers and Vic embraced me tightly. I clenched my eyes shut and held his hand tightly, and suddenly I wasn't the one comforting him any more. He held me as I cried into his arm, and he whispered sweet nothings into my ear as I finally allowed myself to weep over the loss of my boyfriend, of my brother, and the loss of a friend.
