Aiden

"Today is a new day, Aiden" I grip the steering wheel tightly repeating same thing to myself. Hoping to believe everything was ok. I knew, deep down, nothing was truly ok. I breathed deeply again, releasing a heavy sigh. I look up to the café peering at the waitress serving her specialty waffles to the table of the same kids. She smiled as they thanked her before stuffing their little faces. She then walks over to the adult table, talking to the parents.

Look down at the time, it was just about the same time I arrive every morning. I let out another quick sigh before opening the truck door and heading inside.

Same chimes ring as I open the door and walked to my spot. Pretending that entering was no big deal. "Good morning! I'll be with you in a minuet."

Helda came over with the current newspaper as she surprisingly sits down with me at the table. Helda was never a woman to sit with people in her store, ever. She passes me the paper and leans back, as if waiting. "What is the look for?"

"Is that a way to talk to an elder?"

"You are not an elder yet ma'am." I gave her a smirk, she loved hearing she wasn't old, and truthfully, she really wasn't. Ma'am part was just being a smart ass.

"Just don't say anything." She says keeping her eyes on me. Before I can question her, Anastasia comes over with a pad and paper.

"What can I get for you today?" She asked looking at her pad.

Then I saw it.

"Just the regular please."

"Is that it?" She says, still looking down.

"Yes, thank you." I say looking at Helda. I leaned back just like she did earlier, waiting for an explanation.

"Don't look at me like that child, I thought you knew." She huffed, crossing her arms.

"What ha-" She shakes her head, "I don't know. She has been like this all yesterday too and she even called off work the day before. I thought maybe you would know something."

"No, but I will find out. Have you asked Jessie?" She huffed again, "He won't tell me a damn thing! That boy is too soft for her, I swear." She gets up and pats her apron, "I'll go make your breakfast."

"Thank you."

Look up seeing the same mask smile as she greets more people that walked in.
