I feel relief as I walk through the doors of my English class. The guilt loosens its hold on my chest and the weight is taken from my shoulders. Vincent has become some sort of haven for me. I feel the day fall behind me as I sit beside him. He smiles and I feel simplicity make an entrance. "hey," he says, inching his body slightly closer to mine. He has a calming effect to his voice which I use as my own remedy.
"How was your day?" I say, skipping the greeting. I ask because I want to know. I want to understand everything about this boy and I'm going to start with today.
"ah, you know..." he says unexcitedly. I raise my eyebrows at him and he continues. "My oma made me pancakes, eggs, and sausage for breakfast," he says patting his stomach with a laugh.
I giggle before saying "Your Oma and you should have me over for breakfast sometime," I say jokingly.
His smile gets bigger "Yeah, that sounds like a pretty good idea." This takes me by surprise but I nod excitedly. Sometimes I feel like such a dork around Vincent.
Unfortunately for me, English passes quickly and soon I'm at home curled up in my bed. My thoughts were calm simply riding the waves of Vincent's calm sea hours ago but now...
Now they crash against jagged rocks and my boat has a hole in it.
What can I do?
I think about the car crash this morning and how expensive Ember's car will be to fix. My mind races; first, matching the speed of my heart beat and then surpassing it. Many minutes pass and my minds racing thoughts slow progressively.
Soon I feel wise mind take over. I feel like the rainbow after a rainstorm and I'm struck with inspiration. Nights of sorrow and tear stained sheets no longer control me.
Opening my window, I take in the cool night before crawling right through. Yeah that's right; I'm sneaking out.
I'm no longer the sad boring Rena, at least not for tonight. Maybe It's impulsive but adrenaline is my focus. Tonight, I will make up for all my lost teenage years.
I arrive at my destination and gaze up at the window. Pulling out my phone I send a quick text.
Rena: u up?
Vincent: yeah, why? Is something wrong?
Rena: I'm outside your window.
Vincent: You're lying.
Rena: Bet?
Suddenly I see a head pop up behind the window and I can't help but laugh.
Rena: Come outside.
"Are you crazy?" He whisper yells to me.
"Yeah, I kind of am," I say making fun of myself.
"Come on Rena, you know that's not what I meant." He looks guilty.
"I'll forgive you if you come outside," I plead making him laugh.
"fine," he says. Who knew you could have an entire conversation whisper yelling? Huh, the world is full of surprises.
I watch him try his hand at being sneaky. I also watch him put one leg over the window sill before falling into the bush. I laugh not so quietly, and he pops up once again, just to say "Shhhh."
Making his way towards me, he gives me a goofy smirk. When he's only a meter away I attack him with a hug. He catches me and he breaths in behind my neck. "I guess you missed me, huh?" he says.
I pull away and look up at him. "I guess so." We just smile at each other in silence for a few moments more before I drag him in the direction of his car. "Do you have your keys?" I ask.
He grins before pulling them out of his jeans. "Where are we going?" he asks curiously.
"On a road trip. Let me drive," I say. He throws me the keys before making his way to the passenger side.
I smile thinking about the night ahead of us. In all honestly I have no idea where were going I just want to drive and get lost in the night. Once I'm in the car I notice Vincent had turned on the radio. He smiles and opens the sun roof as well.
"Wait, do you have any blankets or anything?" I ask.
"Yeah, inside. Should I go get them?" he says, undoing his seat belt.
"Yes please," I say with my biggest smile. He laughs at me before going to retrieve the blankets. I watch him struggle to climb back in his window and this is when I know an adventure has begun.
