The humble sunlight which stained the sky pleasingly gave covered the world in gentle yellow. The sounds of birds giving their morning call soothed Slightly. And then Wendy came running in her night gown from Peter's room, a hand over her mouth and the other over her stomach. Slightly shook his head. He guessed there'd been roughly a couple weeks since conception or more; that made enough sense if she was sensitive enough to be getting sick at this point.
Wendy doubled over a bucket and moaned and very quickly, Slightly was by her side, pulling her hair out of her face. "Let it out, Wendy." Wendy proceeded to heave and upchuck. "...Lord have mercy on me...." She groaned in between bouts of vomiting. Luckily, it was mostly bile. "Peter." "Nnmmm." "Where's Wendy?" "She's right..." Fingers grasping empty air where his wife should have been, Peter sat up straight, becoming alert out of necessity. Nibs was already standing over him at the foot of his bed, wearing an unreadable expression.
The two boys searched high and low with painstaking carefulness inside the room. Out of desperation, Peter stepped outside the room and called her name quietly. The response to Peter's call? A stomach turning 'bleeck' sound as poor Wendy spewed out yet more stomach contents into the bucket. Slightly turned around even as he bent over beside a kneeling Wendy, rubbing her back and called out to Peter. "She's over here. Give her a bit of space, she's not doin' too well, Peter." Peter started forward in concern anyway, but Slightly's expression made him double-guess his masculine instincts. Even from a distance, he recognized Wendy's posture, and the contents of her stomach on the grounds. She turned her ashen face towards him and gave him a shaky "hang on" motion. Peter reluctantly respected her wish and ushered Nibs back inside the room, giving the young mother some privacy. "She's safe, Nibs. Sorta." Nibs arched a brow. "She's.. well.. Morning sickness." Peter lamely explained. Nibs smiled at him sympathetically, another silent reminder to Peter of the parental bond he and Wendy now shared. "So it begins." "...I did not sign up for this..." Wendy groaned and sprawl out in the dirt a small ways away from the puke bucket that Slightly had taken to removing. The boy clapped off his hands and jogged off toward his room, ducked inside and emerged with a small vial and a tin mug of clean water. He gave Wendy a nudge and the woman sat up. "Here. Take this and it should settle your stomach. The water's to get the taste of upchuck outta your mouth." As Slightly handed off each thing, Wendy nodded understandingly. She took a sip of water, swished things around and spat out the grossness into the dirt and repeated a few times. Wendy downed the medicine in a shot then a little bit of water. "Slightly, you are an angel." Wendy sent him an out of breath smile to which Slightly let out his signature laugh. "Go set your man's nerves at ease. Poor Peter looked frightened half to death." Peter pulled on his pants, fiddling with the belt buckle. "It's all downhill from here." Nibs spoke like he was announcing his jail sentence. "Soon she'll be moody, and wacky cravings at all hours... You may as well kiss your sweet little Wendy goodbye." "Thanks for the advice, Nibs." Peter said flatly. "But I think I'll manage." He picked out his iconic light green shirt and turned to face Nibs. "I just wish I knew how to help her." Wendy ducked back into the tent and cleared her throat to get Peter's attention. "That went well. Good morning." Both males turned at the sound of her voice. "Hey," Peter immediately knelt down, leaning towards her. He gave her an almost apolegetic smile. "Seems like our little one is not gonna give it's mummy an easy time of it, huh?" he quickly added. Two fingers as thick as sturdy elm trees touched Wendy’s clammy arm. "Do you want to lie down?" Wendy shifted from foot to foot before giving a quick nod before rubbing the back of her head. "Maybe just for a little bit. Just a quick nap couldn't hurt." She looked a tad bit drowsy, after all. "I blame the medicine for this one..." She started to shuffle over slowly towards Peter's bedding. Once she had found a comfortable position, Peter carefully laid out close behind her. "Is there anything you want me to do?" he asked softly. The medicine had kicked in with full force. On top of settling the turmoil in her belly, they'd managed to make her exceedingly drowsy. She closed her eyes and managed to speak with the last of her wakeful energy. "Sing me to sleep." "I'm gonna go find Cubby and the twins." Nibs started for the exit, sharing a look with Peter that said he would be giving the lovers some privacy. Once he was gone, Peter returned his attention to his exhausted wife. If a lullaby was the best he could offer her right now, than he would do just that. "A gentle breeze from Hushabye Mountain
Softly blows over Lullaby Bay,
It fills the sails of boats that are waiting,
Waiting to sail your worries away.It isn't far to Hushabye Mountain,
And your boat waits down by the quay.
The winds of night so softly are sighing,
Soon they will fly your troubles to sea.So close your eyes on Hushabye Mountain,
Wave goodbye to cares of the day,
And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain
Sail far away from Lullaby Bay.So close your eyes on Hushabye Mountain,
Wave goodbye to cares of the day,
And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain
Sail far away from Lullaby Bay..."Wendy let Peter's tenor voice lull her to sleep. Peter smiled and kissed her softly. "Sweet dreams, Wendy... I love you..."
