Daniel felt like an outsider, he was an outsider. He watched from the sidelines when Jody and Tristan made the plans, he didn't know how to help, he used to work in the stables at a wealthy man's house. Joshua Darnell. One of the most wealthy men in Aspen, Daniel had been quite lucking to get the job, he was safe there, he had a bed to sleep in, three meals a day and he got to work with beautiful horses. Sometimes he would even get to go with the Darnell family to competitions, at least one of them always won, if the other two of Darnell's children didn't come second and third, he wouldn't let them have dinner for that evening. Daniel always used to sneak food into their rooms from the roof of the stables.
He had to admit, he had a small crush on Darnell's daughter, Poppy. She had shoulder length hair that looked gold in the sun. She had brown eyes which reminded him of chocolate chips, and her smile could bright up his day, even if he was stuck cleaning the stables. But when she was sad, he was sad. When she was angry, he was angry. Always on the inside never showing his emotions, it helped him keep his job. If you didn't argue with the boss, you would keep your job.
He was kicked out of the Darnell house when Joshua Darnell found out he had been secretly seeing Poppy. He caught them one night sitting on the roof of the stables, talking. That night Daniel slept on the streets of a city where the bad people came out at night. That night he had been picked on by a drunk man, flirted with by a thirty year old women and chewed on by a rat.
Two weeks later he found he found himself by the main wall of Aspen. He had a limp from being in a fight with a drunk man a week before, and his clothes were singed from a oil lamp he had stolen from the Darnell family. It ran out eight days ago. Daniel was tired and hungry. And angry. If he had only been more careful, if he had not talked to Poppy that night he would not be here now, he wouldn't have a swollen leg, he wouldn't be freezing cold and-...
A person caught his eye at a bar further down the road. They stood looking back at him, "Hannah!" They turned and started walking away from him, he followed leaning heavily on his right leg, trying to keep her in sight, she turned down an alley about a hundred yards Infront of him, he followed cautiously now starting to wonder if it was really her.
As he got to the alley a arm reached out and pulled him into it, whoever it was wrapped their arms around him and pulled him into a hug. "Daniel, it's really you! Oh my god! Are you ok? Where are you staying?" He pulled away from her all he wanted to see was, was her dimples which played at the sides of her lips when she smiles and he wanted to see her blonde long locks which draped over her shoulders.
"Hannah, why are you here, its not safe here?" Daniel never thought she would come back, she had left in a bubble of fear but all he saw Infront of him now was confidence.
"Me and a group of others are going to stand up to the king, tomorrow. When he is making his tax speech." Hannah could tell he was worried about her but at the word 'king' she would swear that she saw a bit of fire spark in his eyes.
Hannah startled when he said, "how can I help?"
