"Have a good weekend everyone and remember to complete your homework", the elementary school teacher spoke, signaling the end of the school day.  Seiji quietly put his books back into his school bag. "Ehhh? We have to do homework!!! Boo! I wanted to go get ice cream with my friends!!", the pink haired girl in front of him pouted cutely before giggling. " We can get ice cream while we study!!", her friend responded. He didn't know much about either of them. He knew the pink haired girls name was Aino Megumi and that her friends name was Oomori Yuko. He also knew that he found Megumi adorable, and that he felt drawn to her for some reason. He watched the two friends leave before picking up his own bag and walking out of the classroom.

He sat down under the tree in the yard in front of the school. When his parents got divorced, his mom, his little sister and him moved to a new town. Which also meant a new school. He had been in the school for about a month now, and he still had no friends. He didn't want his mom to worry though, so he's stay at the school for a few hours after and just say he was with his friends. Luckily, his mom was preoccupied with other things that she hadn't asked to meet any of his so called friends. He'd just sit there and watch everyone leave with their friends. "Yuu-Yuu!!! Hold on I'll be right back!!", he heard Megumi's cheerful voice call out. He couldn't help but smile as he watched her clumsily run in the opposite direction of her friend. He curiously watched wondering where she was going until he realized she was running right towards him.

"Hello!!!", she exclaimed excitedly, "Do you want to go get ice cream with me and my friend!!?". He stared at her dumbfounded as she smiled and waited for his response. "Um why? We aren't friends...", he questioned. She giggled at his response. "Well not yet!! But we will be!!!", she held out her hand for him to take, as she waited for his answer. "I um...", he paused. How could he respond? Of course he wanted to be her friend. But he was afraid of letting people into his life. "I don't need friends", he responded after a while. He avoided her confused gaze. "Everyone needs friends!!", she disagreed. She sat down next to him. "If you don't want to come with me, then I'll stay here with you", she giggled. He stared at her again and sighed. "Fine", he stood up, "I-I'll come with you". "Really?!", she exclaimed excitedly. He nodded and smiled at her. "Yay!!!", she exclaimed. She stood up and grabbed his hand and dragged him to where Yuko was waiting.

"Megumi?", he called out as he searched for her. It had been 9 years since they had met, and they were now best friends. They'd still visit the tree by the elementary school, though. It was special to them. It was where they met. It was where both of their lives changed for the better. "I'm not here", a muffled voice responded. He shook his head and walked around to the other side of the tree. The way she looked as he approached her pained him. Her face usually taken over by a smile now stained with tears. She looked helpless and lost and there wasn't much he could do about it. "Megumi", he repeated her name as he sat down next to her. She looked up from sobbing and did her best to smile at him. "Um y-you can go... And come back when I'm smiling again... I don't want you to see me like this", she choked out looking away from him. He shook his head and sighed. "You don't need to hide in front of me", he stated seriously, "what's wrong?". Megumi sighed and turned away from him again. "I-it's my mom", she started. "Is she not getting better?", he questioned.

The only response he got was more sobbing. He gently hugged her as she continued her crying. They stayed like that for a while. Just her crying and him trying his hardest to comfort her. "They don't think she'll get better...", Megumi started once she was able to talk. "Oh", was all he could respond with. "They said she needs some sort of medicine, but my dads still working to be able to afford it", she continued. He noticed the sad smile that took over her face as she spoke. It made him sad that she was going through all of this, yet she still tried to smile. She still tried to smile for him.  "Th-there's nothing I can do about this", she finished. She avoided his gaze and looked up at the sky. "Megumi", he called her name not knowing what else to say. He wanted to tell her everything would be okay. He wanted to reassure her that her mom would survive. But he wasn't sure that was true and he didn't want to lie to her. She looked back at him, the same sad smile still on her face. He sighed. "Megumi", he repeated. She looked up at him again. "I-I'm sorry",  she said again before bursting into tears. The sight of her crying broke him. He didn't know how to stop her tears, so he just hugged her again and let her cry.

"I have something for you",  he spoke up after a while.  "What?", she responded a little excitedly. He laughed a little. She was smiling again. And that made him happy. "U-um",  he stuttered as he pulled a small black box out of the pocket of his hoodie. He opened the box revealing a gold ring with a green stone in the shape of a four leaf clover. "I um.... I want you to be happy",  he spoke quietly, meeting her eyes. Her face turned slightly red. "S-seiji?", she questioned. "Megumi", he responded, "I um..... Th-this ring is supposed to represent happiness. I was all alone when we met... You made me happy again. I-I want y-you to be happy".  Her face turned completely red and she smiled at him.  She hugged him tightly and cried.  "Th-thank you Seiji",  she spoke in a muffled voice. "W-why are you still crying!? ", he questioned in concern. "They're happy tears!", she protested. He rolled his eyes and took the ring into his fingers. She rested her forehead against his and smiled at him. "Thank you",  she whispered again. He didn't answer her, though. He just took her left hand and slid the ring onto her ring finger. Both of their faces turned red as their fingers intertwined with each others. "I love y-", she started trying to tell him how she felt, but they were cut off by her phones ringtone. Through the phone all she could hear were a ton of muffled sobs and a shaking voice resembling her mothers. "Mom?", she questioned, trying to figure out what was going on.
"Megumi, I need you to come home. I want to say goodbye..... "
