The weirdest treasure hunt

"Oh god move your ass," I groaned out. "Shut up, my ass is fine and all this weight is muscle I swear," he chuckled and moved his body further on to me. "Yeah, that's what they all say," "Hey! I'll have you know I'm perfectly fine the way I am. Ever heard of a thing called body positivity?" He mocked while moving so now he was lying next to me and facing me.

"Yes, but since it has the word positivity in it I'm not sure if I like it," I chuckled and faced him.

"Ya know, if you didn't try to hide your emotions this much you could get yourself a man," he said and propped himself up on his right elbow.

"Exactly, why else would I hide my emotions?" I said and he just shrugged and got up. Which was when I realised he was shirtless and hot damn, I'm glad he was.

As he was putting a t shirt on, he noticed me staring and just smirked. "Like the view," he asked. "Not as much as the view you'll get right about now," I said and walked away, knowing he was staring at me as I went.

"Hey wait up!" I heard him say loudly as he caught up to me in the kitchen. Right about then Hunter and Emily walked in as well, looking sickeningly adorable in matching pj's and I noticed a girl with dirty blonde hair bustling around to gather things in a hurry.

She suddenly noticed all eyes on her and looked up. Her gaze rested on me and her face scrunched up in confusion before she had what seemed like an epiphany.

"I wondered why Bert woke up late today but I see why now," she teased him with a smirk. "I would've assumed there would've been some noise but I doubt he's that good," thankfully the children were too disoriented to realise someone was speaking and they just quietly went on to get cereal and then take their bowls with them into their room.

"I'll have you know I'm great in bed, but no, we didn't do the do," he said and I saw how his ears and nose were pink. "Oh sure, your virgin ass is great in bed," she snorted before picking up a Starbucks drink I didn't even know was lying there.

"She had a hard time keeping her hands off of me the whole night, just so you know. She begged me to allow her to sleep in the same bed with me," he lied. "Excuse me? I distinctly remember YOU asking ME to sleep in the same bed and why on earth would I be into you? I'm more into 'Blonde Bombshell' over there," I pointed towards the girl.

"Well this blonde bombshell has a name; Chloe. But it's usually without the C or the L," she said and Bert snickered.

I raised an eyebrow at her as she went off out the door. She probably has a normal job and I'm no one to endanger her so dating her is out of the question. Damn it.

"So... are you into girls?" He asked as I was eating cereal and I almost spit out the milk from how random it was.

"Well, yeah, but you still have a chance," I said and I swear he sighed in relief. Right about then I heard two voices scream, "BERT!" with the 'e' dragged out. Two pairs of tiny feet thudded down the hallway and came to halt upon seeing me and Bert.

"We're bored," they both said at the same time. "Well, stay bored for a bit. Me and Nyx are busy so finish your homework till then. We'll have a Disney marathon later," he said while picking up his now empty bowl and going to wash it.

"But we've done all our homework," they said in unison, again.
"Then go build something out of Lego," he said and groaned under his breath out of frustration. I just snickered at his distraught-ness.

"Jeez, no need to be rude," they said and just fist bumped each other, probably because they managed to annoy Bert and strolled off.

"Anyway, let's get to the point," he said and pulled out a chair for me. And then pulled it away when I went to sit so I fell on my ass.

"Ya know, if I didn't know better, I'd say you're into me. A little kid pulls on a girl's pigtails to get her attention when he likes her, I'm assuming this would be the more... mature version," I said after getting up to sit on a chair as he sat opposite me.

"Whatever helps you sleep at night. Anyways, let's get down to business, for real. What do we know about your twin, try not to hold back; even the smallest details might help us," Bert said and I tightly held the glass of water near me for good measure.

"Okay so let's start from the beginning. Him and I weren't the most normal set of twins. Our parents always favoured him over me, but I never blamed him for that. He was always different, there was always an air of mystery and darkness with him. I remember every time I made a friend I would never see him or her after a few days. He never let me be happy. One day our parents had to intervene when they saw him putting eye drops in my food," I noticed how my other hand was bleeding because I dug my nails into my palm but he didn't thankfully.

I ignored the shocked look on his face and continued, "They sent him off somewhere  when we turned 8 but I don't know, I was never told," I said and tried to rack my brain for anything else but found nothing.

"Alright so that's a great start. Maybe we should go down to where you lived as a kid and try and find something around there?" Bert asked with a glimmer of hope.

"Yeah, except we need to do something about the kids. We can't just leave them on their own here," I said and he immediately replied, "Well, we could take them along," he slowly suggested, and I started to protest.

"They're children dumbass, they just saw a man get his throat slit I think that's enough trauma," I smacked him across the head.

"No no no, listen. We can't leave them here and vacation is about to start anyway," he said and I interrupted, "Yeah, because a man hunt sounds like a great idea for a summer vacation," I rolled my eyes.

"It's me that bad you know, we've seen worse," Emily said as her and Hunter slowly came out of behind the wall where they were eavesdropping.

"No, it's still messed up," I said firmly. "Well I'm not leaving them alone here. I say we take them and Chloe," he said.

"Wait where does Chloe come into this?" I asked him. "She's my cousin, she can take care of them if we're in too much danger," he said.

"Then can't we leave the twins with her here?" I asked. "Firstly, she's quitting her job today so she won't be worrying about that. Secondly, we were staying on rent. That guy you killed was our landlord and he was kicking us out. That's what the fight was about so either way, we don't really have a place to live. This is Chloe's apartment," he said and gave my puppy dog eyes to get me to agree.

I'm so confused at why he wants to endanger his siblings but he is their older brother which means he must be doing it to protect them from something possibly worse and to protect them he needs them with him.

"Fine," I sighed. The twins cheered and Bert immediately called Chloe.

"Hey sis, listen. We got a treasure, or rather, man to hunt for this summer," He said and I faintly heard her voice say, "I'm down. Coming over right now."

This was not what normal kids have for their summer vacations but I don't think anything else about this is or was normal. Guess I'm going on a treasure hunt with a set of twins, an overgrown baby and his hopefully somewhat mature sister. Just a normal summer for me.
