It's never simple

"Are you okay? Like mentally, are you okay?" "Yeah," "YOU HAVE A DAGGER COLLECTION IN YOUR DRAWER!" "Don't forget my axe," "YOU HAVE AN AXE?" Bert screamed in shock.

"Please don't break up with me. I need all the protection I can get. And I'm terrified you'll skin me with your axe if I mess up but that's besides the point," he said, completely serious.

We were in my apartment since we'd already come this far and I needed to collect my things. The other three were going through my house and we're getting traumatised as they finished more of the apartment.

"Do you have anything in here that can help us with bringing down Nicole?" Anna asked. "Well, I have a note-" "Why is Nicole hell bent on wasting paper?" Chloe cut me off. "I have no idea. BUT as I was saying before someone cut me off, she oh so kindly slipped a note in my pocket which I haven't yet opened," I pulled out the note from one of my pockets.

"It says, damn she's so vague, 'Call me,' with what I'm guessing is not her number on the back. "Is she into you? It seems like she's into you," Bert asked. "Yeah right," I rolled my eyes at him.

'Call the number you surf!' Hunter urged. "Y'know guys, you're more annoying when I can't see you but I can hear your voices. Especially you, Hunter, what with your voice cracking," Hunter groaned when I said that.

'That just means I'm turning into a man!' Hunter defended himself. 'Yeah guys, my brother's turning into a big boy,' Em mocked.

We ignore their argument and I dialed the number. "Ah, Nyx, I see you got my note," I heard Nicole's annoying voice. "Yes, clearly, it's hard to miss someone's hand when it's brushing your butt," I spat out.

"Until you're done tracing my number and finding where I am, why don't we talk," She suggested. "You want us to find you?" Bert asked. "Well of course. Until then, let's chat. How about... how you failed to protect to your family and now look, where you are, with your hands stained from people's blood. Must have sucked to not know who put you in prison, yes? Poor little girl, named after the Greek goddess of the night. Y'know, even Zeus feared her. But you're a disappointment, even to your name," She mocked and I could hear her menacing grin.

"You're wrong. You're completely wrong. She's way more than you will ever be," Chloe spoke up. "I'm not the one killing people, am I?" Nicole asked. "At least she can feel emotions unlike you, you heartless hag," Bert spat. "You're gonna regret saying that," And the line cut off.

"Strike a nerve, did I," Bert rolled his eyes.

'Hey assholes maybe try shutting up. I don't know the fuck Nicole is on, but she's right outside your door,' "WHAT!" 'Open the door, armed of course.'

Right then we heard a knock. I motioned for them to stay back and stay quiet as I went towards the door, dagger ready to attack. I opened the door and looked around see no one was there, but just to infuriate me Nicole had to leave another damn note on my doorstep.

"She left another fucking note," I groaned. "What does this one say?" Anna asked. "'Kuldhara,'" "What is that?" Bert asked.

"It's an abandoned village in Rajasthan, India. One of my cousins is half Indian so I know a little bit about the country," Anna explained.

"Why's it abandoned?" I asked. "No one knows for sure, but the most probable causes are earthquakes, or water scarcity. Most information about it comes from the 13th century though it was abandoned only in the 19th," She said.

'It's rumoured to be haunted, and even though people living around the are normally don't believe it's haunted they do play it up for tourism,'  Em said. 'Though nowadays no tourists have been going there, at all. No one knows why,'  Em spoke.

"I'm willing to bet it's got something to do with Nicole. I still don't understand why she's gone to such lengths to, well, 'destroy' you," Bert shook his head. "I don't think it's something to do with just me, despite what she says. Whatever's going on, it's something way, way bigger than me," I confirmed.

"And as of now we have no clue as to what the bigger picture is," I sighed. "So we're gonna travel to basically the other side of the world?" Chloe asked. "I am. You guys don't have to come," they all groaned out when I said this.

"Don't start with the whole 'it's my fight' thing again. We're coming," Bert's tone left no room for argument. "I warned you," I raised my hands in defeat.

"How do we get you through airport security? Pretty sure you'd be in the records since you were in jail," Bert asked. 'Not anymore. I've done what I had to, she'll be fine. All of you should get your fake id's right about now,' Dan said.

The doorbell rang and I opened it, staring at Dan in front of me. "Here you go," He threw a bag at me and strolled in to sit down. "What?" I asked. "You're right, this is part of a bigger picture," He shrugged.

"And what do you know about this bigger picture?" I raised my eyebrow at him. "That it literally isn't just your fight. Bert and Chloe go way back with her," "How?" Chloe asked cautiously.

He sighed, "To get Nyx out, it was Nicole who helped. She did it anonymously and made sure none of us could track her. After she got out, she had to kill a couple, as I told her. That was the deal I made with Nicole. The couple she killed-"

"Were my parents," Bert pieced it together and Dan nodded. "She specifically asked for your parents to be killed, and at that point even she couldn't have known that you two were about to meet. Which means she has something to do with all of you now," Dan finished.

'That witch got our parents killed?' Hunter asked even though he knew the answer. 'This makes us really bad children, but as much as I hate her I'm glad our parents are dead. Em and I rarely ever saw them so we never even had a connection with them, and finding out they were abusive was the last straw for us.'

"It doesn't make you bad kids," Anna said. "Everyone has baggage, your's is just.. a bit heavy," She finished.

I awkwardly clapped my hands together and said, "Guess 'visiting a dead village' is something I can cross off of my bucket list," and we all laughed but there was no real joy behind it.
