Chapter 5: Why?

I get ready for school in the morning. I decide to wear what I like to wear. So I throw on a tank top with a picture of the ocean and it says, "Swim, Surf, Smile" I also wear some skinny jeans and a pair of blue sparkly converse.

I feel like me.

I'm still over the moon about yesterday. I think it's safe to say that Jesse likes me.

I grab my bag and walk out of my room. Katy sees me and makes kissy faces.

"Would you grow up?!" she laughs at me.

I knock on Jesse's door, his Mom and sister answer it.

His mom stares at me, "Hi darlin', are you looking for Jesse?"

"Yes mam, I don't know if you remember me. I'm Lilly-"

"Lilly?! Look how much you've grown!" she hugs me and I hug her back. "Well, Sally introduce yourself."

"Hi, my name's Sally."

"Hi cutie, I heard your middle name is Lilly. My name is Lilly too."

She smiles shyly at me.

"Jesse had a bit of a crush on you, probably why he chose your name."

I laugh a little.

"It wouldn't surprise me if he still does like you! You only got prettier!"

I laugh a little more, "Thank you,"

"You just missed Jesse, you should be able to catch up to him though."

"Okay, thank you Ms. P."

"Anytime, hope to see you soon!"

I jog and catch up to Jesse two minutes later.

"Hi Jesse," I say, catching my breath.

"Hey Lilly," he says, he almost sounds sad.

"Is something wrong?" I ask.

"No, nothing's wrong."

There's an awkward silence but I break it.

"Thanks again for yesterday,"

"It wasn't a big deal, I just gotta go."

"Why are you acting so different?" I ask.

"It's nothing, Lilly. Just leave me alone."

"Why? What's making you so mad?"

"Right now, you!" he yells and walks away from me.

What's up with him? He acts all sweet yesterday and then he acts like this now. Is he bipolar or something?

I roll my eyes and walk to Halley and Jasmine.

"Whoa, what were you doing with Jesse?" Halley asks.

Should I tell Halley what happened yesterday and right now?

"Nothing, he's my neighbor, so, we ended up walking to school together but we didn't really talk."

"You're lying," Halley says.

"What?" I ask.

"It's obvious, plus, we heard him yell at you." She explains.

"I'll explain later,"

Jasmine and Halley get a text at the same time.

"What the? Lilly, you were at a diner with Jesse the other night?" Jasmine asks.

There's no point in lying.

"Yea..."

"So, you're going out?" Halley asks.

"No! No, we just simply ran into each other and-"

"You're such a bad liar!" Halley says.

"Okay, fine. We went together, but it wasn't a date. We're friends, just friends."

Friends with benefits.

He kissed me! And now he's acting like he hates me.

"If you say so, but according to Janine, you're a couple." She shows me the text.

"New Couple" and our picture at the restraunt.

"Well, she's a liar." I say.

Is that why Jesse is acting like this? He doesn't want people to know about yesterday? Is he embarrassed that he hung out with me?

I'm going to ask him.

A few classes go by, and when science gets out I decide to find Jesse during passing period. I see the back of his head, and know it's him. I turn the corner. Yup, it's him alright. Why do these things happen? Why?

He's standing there kissing Janine.
