This basically takes place during The Death Cure and I borrowed some elements of the movie. So if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend setting this story aside for now.
You wanted to stay in the Scorch. There, hiding was possible. There were hidden caves and huge rocks and blind spots.
Gally didn't tell you that Denver, the last city, had almost every nook and cranny watched by someone. He stopped you and Newt before curfew started.
"Whatever you do, run. Just run. Follow me. Run. No talking. Just run. That's the only way you'll survive here. Follow me and run."
"We got it, Gally," Newt rolled his eyes.
"This isn't a joke, man," Gally hissed. "You could get caught and get killed within thirty minutes."
After a few moments of silence, Gally began to run, motioning you two to follow. Newt told you to go ahead and whispered something that sounded like I'll be right behind you. The road was quiet, save the quiet rumble of a few cars every once in a while. You felt every nerve in your body tense as you silently followed Gally through the abandoned streets.
Suddenly, Gally stopped walking and stopped you with his arm, gently pushing you against the wall and put a finger up, telling you to be quiet. Then, confusion laced his face. He looked to you like he was acting a silent question, but you didn't know what he was asking. You sighed and put your ear near his face so he can whisper.
"Where's Newt?"
You looked to your left, where Newt was supposed to be.
Nothing but cold concrete.
"Oh my god," you mouthed.
I should have stayed in the Scorch and died. This WICKED thing is a suicide mission.
You looked up at Gally to see his face buried in his hands. Then, he looked at you sadly, whispering:
"We have to go."
"Newt is the reason we came here in the first place! What the hell are you talking about?"
"Be quiet. Do you want to die?"
"Maybe I do now!"
"Shut up!"
One second, you were staring furiously at Gally. The next, you were gasping for air as a hand seized your face.
You stayed silent through it all. You heard Gally's grunts, as if he were struggling against something. Then you heard a few footsteps growing silent.
"He got away," a voice behind you cursed. "Janson will kill us."
Janson.
"Shut up, man. The girl can still hear you." another voice replied. "And it doesn't matter. It's probably just the girl they want. Isn't she snogging the guy they just took into custody earlier?"
"What?"
"Never mind."
"You lobby security department people are nuts."
---
When you woke up, you were sat on a comfortable chair in a well-lit, air-conditioned room. As your vision and hearing began to clear, you registered a figure walking towards you.
"And the prodigal daughter returns," the figure said.
"Janson," you greeted bitterly.
"I hate having to do this to you, Y/N. I really do. But you have something very, very important to us."
You didn't respond.
"You don't want to know?"
Silence.
"I'll tell you anyway. You have Subject A5's motivations. You are his motivation. He rarely does anything that isn't for you. Now, you're a smart girl. You've figured out by now that we want him for something."
You glared at him as he stepped closer.
"You've spent a decent amount of time in the Psych labs because of your boyfriend, haven't you? You probably know the mental state of half the employees of WICKED. However, has it ever occurred to you that you have never assessed his mental state? Seen his MRIs?"
Now you were genuinely confused. You stayed silent, however, because you knew Janson would continue without you asking.
"It never occurred to us either. After all, he was the head of the labs. We didn't have to assess him fully until we sent him up to Phase One."
You shut your eyes, trying to shoo away the memory.
Janson kneeled down in front of you. "What a painful time that must have been for you."
You glared.
"He was normal enough, but his scans had a different... texture to it. It was clearer. I can't explain it visually or medically, because I'm no artist or physician, but Dominic could see it."
Your head snapped up at the name.
"You remember Dominic, don't you? He was Newton's best friend. He missed you terribly when you escaped. But worry not, Y/N, that won't happen again."
You exhaled shakily, focusing on staying still and silent. Maybe he'd leave if you were unresponsive to his taunts.
"Enough chit-chat. Let's get to the real questions. Where is Y/N's boyfriend? Why is he here? What do they want him to do? How did we get to him? Who is he with?"
Janson finally grabbed a seat and sat across you. It occurred to you just now that this might be your prison cell. Apart from a bed, drawer, and three chairs, there was nothing in it. A door by the corner also caught your eye. A bathroom, perhaps.
"We succeeded in getting him here, Y/N. We're one step closer to saving humanity. However, he's not participating in our procedures. He's not moving at all. The only way we could ever... encourage him, is you. If you'd only convince him it's a necessity..."
What?
"Of course, if you don't, we'll take matters into our own hands. We're only being gracious, Y/N. We may be merciless in our procedures, but we still know love. And what you feel for A5 is definitely that."
"How... how?"
"How will we take matters into our own hands? Funny you'd ask..." he pulled out a large tablet from the bag that rested on the foot of his chair and showed it to you.
It was what you assumed a live feed of Newt wherever he was. You were together just this morning, but he already looked like he's been starved for months. Wires were connected to his head, like the wires he used to use when he was still Isaac.
"They're slowly taking away his memories of you."
Unwelcomed tears welled up in your eyes.
"He will still remember you, Y/N. There will be a few blurry memories, that's all. You can still save him. Convince him to participate."
Janson finally stood up.
"If you don't, Y/N, both Isaac Newton and Subject A5 will cease to exist."
...Thoughts?
I will update when a certain number of votes has been achieved. :)
