Susan took a long deep breath. The smell of oak and sweat and grass filled her nostrils. She drew back the string of her bow. The feathers of the arrow tickled her cheek. The string bit slightly into her fingers as she held her aim. "Aim" she thought to herself "Inhale" A pause. "Exhale." Another beat. "Fire."
Susan looses the arrow and it sailed through the air like a bird. It buried itself dead in the center of a large makeshift target. A perfect shot. Susan smiled to herself and lowered her bow. She hadn't lost her niche. Thump, Thump. Thump, Thump. The sound of hooves rang in Susan's ears. She hadn't been back in Narnia for long but somehow someone had figured out she was here. She didn't want anyone to know she was here. It would cause them and her too much pain to see her after so long and suddenly be ripped apart again when it was time for her to leave. Susan couldn't handle that. Not again.
Susan notched another arrow and took her aim in the direction of the hoof beats. A pitch black blot came into view. A glint of a sword. Flashes of black. The rider was still fuzzy but Susan could tell he was riding a strong, black mare with a long raven colored mane. Thump thump thump thump. The hooves beat fasted, in time with her heart. Susan thought she recognized the horse but she wouldn't let herself get her hopes up only to be heartbroken. Not again.
Soon the rider wasn't as fuzzy. She still couldn't make out his face but she could tell now that he had near shoulder length, jet black hair. Susan gasped and her aim faltering slightly. "It can't be," she thought,
"It's just a coincidence." Her heart pounded furiously in her ears, her throat, her chest. The rider came closer. Square jaw, strong nose, eyes like midnight.Tears sprang to Susan's eyes. He was within 5 yards of her. She didn't want it to be him but at the same time she did. She wanted it to be him so badly. She'd missed him so badly. She'd wanted to stay with him. To be with him, in Narnia, forever. Her knuckles were white from gripping the bow and it's string so hard.
8 yards. How is it that after so long her feelings hadn't changed. Susan could make out his face a bit more clearly from here. She noticed something new about his features. Susan chuckled lightly. He'd grown stubble. 4 yards. She opened both her eyes. 3 yards. She lowered her bow. 2 yards. She dropped the bow all together. Her heart was like a drum. Beating faster than it probably should be. 1 yard. 3 feet.
The rider dismounted his horse. Susan burst into a run, her long blue dress whipped behind, between, and around her legs. The rider had begun to run too and soon they collided. Susan wrapped her arms tightly around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder. He encircled his arms about her waist so tightly that he seems like he's never let go. He lifted her up off the ground and she kicked her feet back, pushing her face further into the crook of his neck.
"Susan," he whispered in her ear, "I've missed you so much." His grip around her waist tightened ever so slightly. Susan sighed. "I've missed you too Caspian," she breathed, "More than you could ever know." Caspian set her back on the ground gently and pressed a light kiss to her temple, lingering there for a few seconds. Susan lifted her head from his shoulder to look in his eyes. Such beautiful, safe eyes. Eyes she could get lost in. He touched a hand to her cheek.
"How? How are you back?" Caspian asked in a tone of disbelief. Susan smiled. "I've learned as much as I could in my world," She replied, quoting the words Aslan had said to her when she arrived not so long ago, "But the one thing that had been missing in my world was you." A wide smile spread over Caspian's lips. She leaned forward and kissed him, lightly. He returned her kiss and pulled her closer to him.
Caspian pressed a hand to the back of Susan's neck and tilted her head up. Their kisses became earnest. They felt fulfilling and just so right. After so long, they were finally together. They way it always should have been. Susan moved her hand and pressed a thumb to Caspian's lips to break the kiss. She closed her eyes, breathing he same air as him. The one that got away. The one she had never gotten over. Her Prince. Her King. Her Caspian.
