Dee's POV.....
I was a nervous tired wreck the following morning. My mind kept coming up with different ways this job could go wrong adding to my nerves that had been going haywire since Liz left me at seven pm to go back to her hostel.
I woke up with my hair looking like a birds nest and eye bags the size of Alaska, my red eyes not helping the situation as I looked like I had smoked weed the whole night. My situation made me wish that I had actually smoked weed, which was illegal by the way but I couldn't have cared less if it meant I got a few hours of happy hour high.
Quickly checking the time from my phone I noted that I had less than twenty minutes before I was picked up. Cursing out loud, I rushed to the bathroom and quickly showered and brushed my teeth then rushed back and took the first things I saw in my closet, not caring how they looked just as long as I looked decent.
Since I was always on the verge of being late, I had perfected the art of getting ready in crunch time. Am African and we are known for rarely being on time. Sue me.After I had managed to make my appearance decent, I took what I needed and put them in a bag and rushed to the kitchen, making myself a cup of black tea and pouring it in my portable flask cup before rushing out the door.
I made it down the stairs just as a black escalade four wheel drive stopped outside my building and I mentally did a happy victory dance. The old accented man walked out of the car, dressed impeccably in a crisp black suit, matching it with a white dress shirt and black shiny dress shoes that reflected the sun's rays.
"Hello Miss Lanji." He greeted me, his smile slowly turning into an amused grin as his eyes perused me from head to toe and I felt myself get self conscious.
"Hello..." I greeted.
"Edward but you can call me Eddie." He finished.
"Hello Eddie. And please call me Dee." I said smiling politely though my smile was slowly disappearing with how he kept giving me the amused stare.
I cleared my throat and signalled the car to him with my eyes and he apologized before he politely opened the door for me and closed it after I had gotten in and I mumbled a quick thanks. He started driving a few seconds later and the car was filled with an awkward silence and I got my phone out, deciding Instagram was more entertaining at the moment.
Despite my attention being on my phone, I kept feeling his eyes on me and when I had finally had enough I put my phone down on the seat beside me and looked up at him, catching him red handed as our eyes clashed through the mirror.
"Is something wrong?" I asked.
"Whatever do you mean miss? "He asked feigning innocence and I rolled my eyes at his antics.
"You've been looking weirdly at me since you walked out of the car this morning." I went straight to the point.
"There's nothing wrong. Its just that your attire is, i apologize if I offend you, a bit unusual." He replied and I felt my nerves kick in.
"What's unusual about it?" I asked trying to shake off my nerves from my voice.
"Oh don't worry. Its nothing really. Just a bit too causal than what I've seen most of the previous nannies wear."I honestly saw nothing wrong with what I had on. I wore t-shirts and jeans and sneakers to my other baby sitting sessions and it had never been a problem. In fact I found it an appropriate attire for the job as it was comfortable and much more flexible.
"Its not a bad thing, don't get me wrong. In fact, I think its the perfect attire for your job. Its just shocking to see someone wear jeans and T-shirt instead of a suit." He added when he noticed that I had been too quiet.
"okay." Was all I replied and we went back to the awkward silence yet again. It wasn't long before he drove up to the entrance of the mansion and told me to head right inside as someone was waiting for me. Sending another thanks his way, I got out of the car and walked into the huge mansion.
Standing at the entrance hallway was the same woman who had done the interview, dressed stylishly in a ruby red skirt suit and black four inch heels, her hair styled into a tight bun and the black rimmed glasses sitting perfectly on top of her button nose.
She too looked me up and down and smiled before she made her way towards me, her right hand stretched out.
"Miss Lanji. Good morning. You are right on time, which is good for your first day." She said shaking my hand.
"You didn't give me much of a choice with the timeline you gave me." I blurted out and she looked at me unemotionally and for a moment I thought I had offended her until she burst out laughing and I sighed out in relief.
"I like you.... Anyway, come along now. You have a lot to catch up on and you don't exactly have enough time." She said as she started walking up the stairs and I followed obediently, my eyes wandering around the huge house, taking in its beauty while I also tried to get what the woman who had introduced herself as Valarie said.I learnt that there were two kids, Zoe was nine turning ten in two months and her younger brother Zack who was eight. They both were homeschooled by a team of professional teachers and then afterwards would partake in some extra curricular activities depending on their timetable. The more I got to learn about what these kids lives consisted of the more the sounded like royalty and I kind of felt sorry for them not having normal lives like every other kid.
I wondered why they needed me in the first place as it seemed that these kids were busy and always had an adult with them.
"Your job is to basically be with them whenever they aren't having their regular lessons which are usually from nine am to twelve pm. You will leave at five or six pm depending on when Eddie will be back home to take your place as he is their night nanny." Valarie explained then continued showing me the different rooms. The entire first wing was the kids floor and was where I was allowed to be and the ground floor of course. The second floor was entirely Mr arrogant's floor and was completely out of bounds unless of course he gave me permission to go there.
When the tour was done, Valarie led me to the huge library where I found both kids sitting silently immersed in the books on their thighs.
They looked up instantly and it felt creepy how the looked up at the same time, their amazing light green eyes clashing with my brown ones as the took me in. They gave me questioning stares that were quickly replaced with indifference.
"Kids, this is your new nanny, Dhahabu's or Dee as she prefers being called. Dee, this is Zoe, "she introduced pointing at the gorgeous black haired princess, "and this is Zack." She finished pointing at the boy.I noted how similar the two siblings looked. They both had midnight black hair and green eyes which they obviously took from their father. However, they both had freckles dotting their tanned cheeks and upper nose.
Zoe, who had tied her hair neatly into a ponytail and had on a red dress, had a black beauty spot on top of her upper right lip that added to her beauty.
Zack had on the whole geeky look, a red sweater the same color as his sister's dress, a black and white checked shirt and black pants, complete with matching black dress shoes. He had on thick blacked rimmed glasses that made him really cute.
"Well I'll let you three get acquainted. Good luck. "Said Valarie as she left the room, closing the door behind her."Hello... "I started but was cut off by Zoe's soft voice.
"Let's cut to the chase here. We know you don't really give a damn about kids and merely want the money so let's make a deal that will benefit both parties. Stay out of our way and we promise to make your life here bearable." She said glaring at me and for a moment I wondered why such a small child could harbor such negative feelings.
"And if I don't?" I asked challenging them.
"Then you won't last a week here."She added. I glanced at both her and her brother and I again noted that despite both of them holding a united front, Zoe was the one that called the shots.
"Hmmm.... I don't mind agreeing to this deal.. "
"Good... "
"However, I also don't agree with some of it. As much as am a lazy bum, I'd feel bad eating your father's money without actually doing anything. So here is my suggestion. You let me do my work peacefully, without any resistance from your end and I promise to give you your space and privacy. Just so long as I know where you are at all times." I told them.
"And what if we don't?" She asked.
"Then I promise that before I quit, I will leave a lasting impression on you. And it won't be pretty." I told them. They seemed to contemplate my offer and I wanted to laugh at the scenario I had found myself in. Never in a million years did I picture myself negotiating with kids who were barely teenagers.
"Fine. Deal."she said and stretched her hand out for me to shake. I took her small hand into mine and shook on it, sealing the deal.It seemed that being ruthless deal maker ran in the family.
After the deal was sealed, I went for a tour around the library as the two kids went back to ignoring my presence. I wasn't offended after all, they weren't acting like spoilt brats screaming and causing havoc which I could handle.
I looked around the different shelves until I found an interesting epic adventure novel and went back to seat in the lounge area.
I felt eyes on me and when I looked up, I found green eyes looking curiously at me.
"What?" I asked.
"You are different. I like that."said Zoe though I knew she was curious about my attire but chose to put her sentence in a diplomatic manner.
I smiled in response then went back to my book. Hoping in God's name that I stayed in their good books otherwise I had a feeling that I'd be in a lot of trouble with those two if we clashed.PS:The pic is of who I imagine Zoe and Zack to be. But you can give them the description I gave them and imagine them just like I did with the features
