Veretta lay in the bed of her hospital ward and stared out the window with a weak smile. Even as the sun rays reach the surface of her skin, she could feel it, that it was her last day.
Daniel was diligently by her side, holding onto her hand with a firm but also loving grasp. "A miracle will take place and you'll get better. You owe me a date, Ms Rose." He joked, trying to lighten the atmosphere and mood.
"My death is a miracle. God gave me such a beautiful gift, allowing me to reunite with Lycon." Veretta replied, rendering Daniel speechless.
Veretta now had only one locket around her neck, for she placed her lover's one back where it belonged, at the cemetery with Lycon's ashes.
Veretta stared at Daniel with pleading eyes, "When I leave for heaven, please put this," She points out her locket, "At the cemetery with my ashes. It's in my death will, but just in case, this is the last favour I will ever ask of you."
Daniel nodded as the agreement sunk into his mind. What was so important about the locket? He wondered as the girl fiddled with the piece of jewellery around her neck.
"Can I go for a walk?"
He was sceptical, "You're bedridden, aren't you? How are you going to?"
Veretta laughed. "That's why I asked you if I could. I need someone to help me, wheel me around."
That was when it struck him. He had a few low chuckles himself as he set up the wheelchair in the room. With much patience, Daniel carried Veretta onto the contraption.
"Where to?" He asked.
To this, Veretta laughed again, "I'm not bedridden, but I am hospital-ridden, if that's a term."
Daniel you idiot. He chided himself jokingly as an "oh" escaped his lips and he laughed along. He wheeled Veretta to the hospital gardens.
"Finally, fresh ai-." Veretta muttered, to be cut off by a strong breeze, as well as her playful singing. "Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba!"
Daniel cringed at the reference. He cringed more as he caught himself singing along to the song, Circle Of Life, "Sithi uhm ingonyama."
They broke into laughter.
"I'll miss singing in the choir." Veretta commented with a sigh, but her smile soon formed again. "I'll sing with the lovely angels of heaven when I go."
Daniel smiled. Even in death, Veretta managed to find a bright side. Where could you find that? "I'll miss you."
Veretta smiled. "How about we have that date today, before I leave?" This left him with no words. He had to ask if he heard her correctly twice before he believed it. "Why, don't want?"
"Huh? No, no. I'm just surprised." He muttered, still processing. "Shall our date be all over the hospital?" He had to joke, as Veretta was pretty much stuck in the medical compound.
She giggled, "Let's have lunch here, it would be like a picnic date." Veretta suggested. "I always wanted one of those." She added cheerfully.
Daniel agreed, and wheeled her back to her ward to prepare some food. He got a variety of bread, cookies and fruits to share, all in a picnic basket.
"Ready to go, Ms Rose?" He invited, to which Veretta smiled and agreed.
They reached the hospital gardens, to be welcomed by the warm sun. It was a good temperature, not too hot as to burn them alive, and not too cold to freeze them to death. Just a nice light breeze and warm light.
