My hands clench the steering wheel tightly and I must repress the impulse to speed and scream. I have the music playing much louder than it should.
"T-Tonnie, are you okay?" Trevor turns down the volume.
"No, Trev. I'm not." I let out a heavy sigh and loosen my grip. "I don't have anywhere to live." The road ahead of me twists and turns through the shining neighborhoods. The house have lights on that highlight silouhettes of happy families. Silence begins to fill the air. It is thick, I guess it is actaully just humid.
"Tonnie, we could turn the study room into a bedroom. There is an extra matress in the basement. It woud only be temporary until you find a place." I can feel his eyes on me. It isn't a bad idea.
"I guess, but I don't want to inconvenience you guys." I glance at him momentarily then focus back on the road.
"Really? You're family, it is not a problem." His hand rest on my knee for a couple seconds.
"Thanks Trev, you da best." I chuckle. We pull up to his house. Unlike most people in LA, the Morans live in a small simple house. They have always seemed to value simplicity and it is my favorite part of visiting. "I'll wait out here while you ask your parents." He nods and heads inside. I am a twenty year old girl seeking help from a teenager. What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction comes on the radio. As much as I dislike them it is one of those songs you can't help but sing along to.
The front door opens and Trevor motions me to come in. I pop the trunk open and grab my suitcase. I don't both to grab everything considering I want to get my own place as soon as possible. Shoot. I will have to buy all new furniture. You would think they would tell you if your apartment when shuts down.
Their house is nice and simple. The walls have white picture frames with family photos, some that I am even in. The house is always dimly lit, like a sunset.
"Tonnie!" My aunt Lisa practically knocks me to the ground. "How are you sweetie?" She grips my shoulders tightly and smiles.
"Hi." I giggle. "I'm great, except for the whole homeless thing." I shrug nonchalantly. Her eyes soften.
"Clark is setting up a bed for you. Stay as long as you need." She hugs me again.
"Oh don't worry. I won't be here long." I nod and walk up the stairs to the computer room next to Trevor's room.
"Hey there Ton." Clark's voice is very deep and bruting. I wonder if Trev's voice will ever get that way. "Hope this will do." He motions to the room. He has shoved the lounge chair between the desk and the wall and placed a matress with a thin blue sheet against the wall. There is barely enough room to walk.
"It is great Clark." I smile. He glares at me in disgust. "Uncle Clark." He grins and leaves without a word.
I guess I could make a video. I reach into my backpack and pull out my camera and tripod. I double check to make sure that sure it is charged. It is.
"Hey there my lovelies!" I wave. "As you can see I am in a new location." I motion the blank wall behind me. "Well sadly my apartment building was shut down and I have no idea how. So I am staying with my cousin TREVOR MORAN." I raise my voice on his name.
He bursts in the door and basically flies to the bed. "You rang?" He poses.
"Oh, I was just telling them about how lame you are." I let my expression go blank to make it seem like I am serious. He hits my arm.
"Tonnie Lynn Brooker, I will kick you out of this house." He snaps his fingers and and wiggles his head. I roll my eyes.
"See what I have to put up with?" I put my face close the camera and point back to Trevor with my thumb.
"Shut up!" He then shoves me off the matress. "Now let me tell you guys something about Tonnie." I sit back wanting to hear this. "She farts all the time and picks her nose and totally doesn't shave her-"
"Trevor!" I fly back into the frame, cover his mouth and knock him down. "Okay well that is it for this video. Stay lovely and I will see you when I see you." I blow a kiss and cover the camera. "You suck!" I say while looking down at him.
"Well hey Tonnie." He then whispers. "SMD."
"Get out you dingleberry."
"What? I didn't do anything." He spits out laughing hysterically. I drag him by his feet out the door. His voice becomes muffled as I slam the wood door behind his head. "Tonnie bear let me in."
I put on "my internet kids never sleep" crew neck and pop in my ear buds. I slowly drift to sleep listening to Kings and Queens by SoMo.
--------------
"TONNIE WAKE UP!" My bed is shaking. I open my left eye only, winking powers activate, and see Trevor bouncing on my bed.
"¿Puedes no?" (Can you not?) I cover my face with my arms. He begins to flicker the light.
"Ton come on. Ha that rhymed." He grabs me by the ankles and drags me off the bed. I hold onto the sides.
"No." I moan holding out the letter "o". "What time is it?" I rub my eyes and shake off Trev.
"It is almost noon and we have stuff to do." He sounds irritated with me, like I was supposed to know what was going on.
"Dude I just got here, I have nothing planned except Vidcon this weekend." I sit up and glare at him, I wanted to sleep all day.
"Speaking of Vidcon, I have rehearsal today. Now get up." He kicks my leg and leaves walking sassily and swaying his hips.
At least I will get to meet YouTubers. I get up and search for the bathroom with my makeup bag in hand. Still in my pajamas and regardless of what I am wearing I put on a very thin line of black mascara on my upper eyelid and some mascara. I brush my teeth and put my hair in a loose side braid. I feel like I should dye my hair or something. Maybe later.
"Hurry up." I am startled by seeing Trevor behind me in the mirror.
"I have been in here for like five minutes. Calm your tits." I walk out as slow as I can and eventually he just shoves me.
I don't plan on actually dressing decent so I put on my grey chibi batman shirt and black shorts. I complete it with a blue and black batman snapback.
"Trev, you ready?" I walk back to the bathroom to see him still trying to style his hair. "Really? And you complain to me?"
"Oh buzz off." He finishes " quiffing it and heads to his room. I stand outside his door tapping my foot loudly. "I'm coming!" He snaps. Suddenly he bursts out the door and down the stairs. "Come on!"
I follow him downstairs and he is ready halfway out the door with one shoe on. I slip grey vans back on. "What? No breakfast?" I whine.
"We can stop."
I groan at his urgency on impulse. We hop in the car.
"Where to my princess?"
"Starbucks!" He sticks his fist in the air.
"Yes my queen." I bow my head before starting the car.
"Will you ever stop that."
"You wish."
