I was thrown down from my bunker as the whole vessel shook. Scrambling up quickly, holding my throbbing head, I ran out of my cabin to see people running helter and skelter.Still dizzy from the effect, I dragged my unwilling body towards the deck.
"People, there has been a problem. The ship has been caught in a storm leading to a hole in the metal and our fuel tank is leaking. The waters of the arctic have frozen our engine. We've sent an SOS. I need you to immediately evacuate the ship. Ladies and children first," the crisp voice of the Captain buzzed through the intercom.
Once we were at the deck, I looked around at the frozen sea and the icebergs. People were fighting to get into lifeboats as their strings were cut off one by one.
I rushed towards the last one at hand. But before I could get a man roughly pushed me to the floor, jumping in and cutting the rope.
"Bastard!" I screamed, gripping the railings, thinking about what to do.
The few people who were lucky to get lifeboats drifted away as the others watched in despair.
"What do we do now?" someone from the crowd asked.
"We jump into the water or go down with the ship. I'd prefer the latter." a voice replied, the captain.
The people dithered for a while but ultimately one by one they started jumping into the freezing waters.
The captain's eyes suddenly fell on me, standing alone.
"Are you... " he enquired, eyes widened.
My hands instinctively went to my abdomen as I felt the bulge, gently nudging it. My baby move inside. I hoped my fall hadn't hurt it too much.
"Yes, I'm pregnant," I declared.
"I need to get you out of here, fast," he said with determination.
"But how?" I retorted.
"I'll help you swim to the nearest iceberg and we can stay there, bearing out the cold till help comes. I don't see any other way," he offered.
I knew that I had to try.
I gripped the hand offered to me and together we jumped.
As the water touched my skin, a flash of pain ran through it. I gasped and struggled to keep my head above water.
I could feel the weight of my body pull me down to the abyss of death.
The captain deftly caught me, dragging me towards an iceberg. He waited in the water, hoisting me up. And then climbed up himself.
My teeth chattered as I dragged my ice-cold night-gown to myself.
Without any warning, he wrapped his arms around me, trying to provide a semblance of warmth.
"Where is your husband?" he asked softly.
"He left me because she is a girl," I mumbled.
He didn't speak for a moment as he drew me closer. I relaxed.
"If we get through this. Will you come with me?" he whispered.
"Sure," I curled into his chest, waiting for rescue or death, whichever came first.
