A sharp pain shot through her body as the cloud of darkness engulfed, threatening to strangle her.
Her eyes hurt even as she tried to randomly hurl summer spells to defeat her opponent. A whip of smoke lashed out from the dark swirls and she lost her balance as shackles of dark magic ensnared her legs and she dropped to the ground, defeated.
Xandred's cruel red eyes then turned to the people, common elves, leprechauns, fairies and other citizens and immediately the dark forces surrounded them.
Summerburst tried her best to use her magic, but she was drained and too week. She felt dizzy. Defeat was staring her in face.
"Leave them Xandred. They never did any harm to you," she panted, trying to break free from the chains.
"Poor girl," he gave an insulting grin, placing the sword of Morpheus at her throat, "So desperate to save her kind from extinction. Let's make a deal, shall we?"
"What deal?" she hissed.
"I'll leave all of them in return of you serving me for eternity."
Summerburst's heart skipped a beat. She looked around at all the people standing silently. In all eyes seemed to be a disdain. They actually wanted their freedom in exchange of hers.
"Fine," she gritted her teeth.
Just then a gush of cold air blew. Winterfrost rushed in to be at her side as her snowy trail made little crystals of snow fall softly.

"You aren't going there amidst all the creatures of the netherworld and that's final," said Winterfrost, tightly holding her hand.
Summerburst's eyes were glassy and it gave away no emotions, even as her friend shook her, trying to dissuade her from the decisions.
"Look, the people of Gardenia need you. You can send someone else. A leaderless Gardenia will soon turn to a lawless mess..."
"Enough," her voice made Winterfrost stop midway. "Xandred isn't the person who is ready to make a negotiation. He's powerful with all the dark energies of the underworld. Our forces would be futile. If there was one way to stop him from hurting my people, I would have done that."
"But..."
"Xandred has no enmity with anyone else. It's me he wants and it's me he'll get. No one needs to be punished by him."
There was an edge of finality in her voice that was hard to ignore.
Winterfrost shrugged in defeat. She knew very well how stubborn Summerburst was. None of the guardians of the season existing in that realm had the power and wrath of Summer. No wonder she was the queen by unanimous decision.
"People, she's your queen, your guardian!" a frustrated Winter shouted.
Her cries were met with disbelief.
"Why does it have to be like this?" her voice broke.
"Because, I'm bound by honor and when you need to choose between duty and desire, then the clash can rip you apart," Summer gave a dry smile.
Just then Xandred appeared and darkness veiled Summerburst who vanished into the dark, bottomless abyss.
