"Victor! It's time!" I exclaimed at my boyfriend who was upstairs. After 5 years of us dating and 2 of us living together, Victor was finally letting us get a dog. I am a huge dog lover, and Victor likes dogs but he's never liked them as much as I do.

He knows how much work they are as well, and he doesn't think I can handle it. He says he feels bad leaving me to deal with the dog when he's gone, but I just see him as someone to spend time with when Victor is away for hockey.

Victor came down the stairs slowly and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. I woke him up so we could get to the shelter at 11, exactly when it opened. I was already dressed, shoes on and ready to go. I was standing in front of the door waiting to leave and Victor laughed. "You're a character, you know that right?" He asked me and I shook my head. "I just want to go get my puppy!" I yelled and he laughed.

We got in the car and started driving to the nearby shelter. Victor really didn't want a high maintenance dog because we were gone so often, so we were on the hunt for a small dog. I had small dogs my whole life growing up and all they ever wanted to do was snuggle.

When we walked in, I immediately grabbed a basket and started grabbing toys. I would come back for accessories depending on which gender dog we got. We had already bought food, food bowls, and a cage.

I scanned the dogs in the cages at the shelter. It made me so sad seeing all of the dogs that I couldn't get. "Victor, look at this corgi!" I yelled and my boyfriend came running over. She was small and light brown and white. She was sitting on her stomach, smiling through the window of her cage.

"She's precious! We need to take her out!" I squealed and Victor waved over a worker. "Excuse me ma'am, me and my girlfriend would like to see this baby right here." He pointed to the small corgi and the woman smiled. "She doesn't get taken out much, she's very shy so people tend to stray away from her." My heart dropped when I heard that. I grabbed Victors arm and looked up at him and he just looked at me with a sad face.

"Vic, we need her." I told him and he chuckled. "We haven't even taken her out yet!" He said. "I know she's the one, I know it." He smiled at me knowingly. The woman led us to a room where we could play with the puppy. Victor and I sat in the room and waited for the woman to bring the dog and some toys.

"Here you go, she probably won't play for long." The woman explained and she opened the door, setting down the puppy. "Please keep her on the floor if you can, but she'll probably want to snuggle into your chest." She smiled.

Immediately, the small dog trotted over to Victor, snuggling into his legs. "Oh my goodness! She's precious!" Victor said. She climbed into his lap and we pet her. I took pictures of the two of them together, falling in love with her even more as she fell in love with my love.

"Okay, she's the one." Victor said. I laughed and nodded in agreement. "What should we name her?" I asked and we thought for a second. "What about Petunia?" I asked him. Petunias are my favorite flower. "I love it."
