A sheet of glass.
A million miles.
For people so close to each other, there was much more between them than a sheet of glass.
From the confession of his love to the carelessness of his sacrifice, Simmons felt that she didn't really know Fitz as well as she thought she did.
What else lay buried beneath the surface? What else remained uncovered, lost in the confusion of the past few weeks?
She didn't know anymore. Hell, Simmons didn't know who she was anymore.

"You may be able to go in with him tomorrow. Maybe even touch his hand. He's doing well, but we can't know the full extent of the damage until he wakes up."
She nodded, and crossed her fingers tightly.
But for now, she was restricted to watching him through a sheet of glass, amd she didn't move until Skye gently prised her away from the window and forced food down her throat.
The basic things are easy to forget when you care about someone else's life more than your own. She wouldn't have eaten or drank for the past five days unless someone had made her. It was like her body had been shut down and the real world didn't exist, and she was living in a world of her nightmares and pointless fantasies and hope beyond hope.
And when Skye put her to bed that night, her fingers were still crossed as tightly as the elastic band around her heart.

His face was burned into the back of her eyes as she slept. It was the only thing she could see.
She just needed his blue eyes to open.
