Chapter 31: Axel

"Don't get mad, but I forgot to pull out." She stood up and faced me.

"I know you fucking lying. I'm not on birth control Axel." She pushed me away from her.

"You saying that like I knew." I assumed she was on it.

"I'm not trying to be nobody baby mama, I refused to be stuck in the same box as Yazira. Being a baby mama not bad, but I'm not trying to be one, I didn't even like kids."

"What kids are cute, especially if I'm the dad."

"Why I feel like you was trying to trap me."

"No I didn't, I just forgot." It was true along with a little distraction by her.

"Nah, I know what this about. You going off to Harvard. Trying to leave me with a baby, so you'll be connected to me always. Calling me every twenty minutes, talm bout 'how my baby?' Your baby is the same as they were twenty minutes ago. Nigga, go to class."

"Now you just being childish. Nothing wrong about a concerned father worried about his child."

"I didn't say that. I'm just saying I'm here, you're there. Of course you will always hold a place in my heart but we won't have really a reason to STAY connect, but with a baby that's a different story." She got off the counter and sat on the toilet next to it.

"Okay, I understand that, but what if you come with me?" I suggested and hoped she would agree. That way everybody would be happy.

"..." She didn't say anything to my dismay.

"Jaelyn?"

"To Harvard?"

"We'll get an apartment together."

"Axel, I'm on probation. I can't leave the state or I could get arrested and have to serve the rest of my sentence behind bars."

"Oh yeah. But Jae, you can still move down there, but just after I do. That will give me time to look for apartments and to get a job..."

"...Axel..."

"...I'm willing to make us work and beside we really don't have much holding us here."

"Axel, we haven't even been together for that long yet. I feel like this is too much too soon to just move in together." But to me it felt longer. I knew her better than I knew myself.

"I can stay on campus and you can stay in the apartment if that's makes it better."

"Look, Axel. I'll have to think about this, but either way if I choose to go or stay. Promise me if you had to pick between your dream or me. You'll always pick your dream."

"N..."

"Axel. Promise me. Nothing else will kill me inside faster than not to see you happy."

"But what if you're in my dream." I walked over towards her and got eye level to her.

"Just promise me. If we are meant to be, we will find our way back, no matter what. Harvard is your dream and I'm not going to stand in your way. Be great for yourself." She held my face between her hands. Jaelyn could be sweet...when she wanted too.
