Lira, Hiccup, and Toothless walked to the Hofferson's, in front of the house Astrid and Jack were sitting on the grass. She laughed a little and took a bite out of a chicken leg. Jack lifted his own chicken before noticing Hiccup and Lira were coming and calling out with a mouth full of chicken. The two sat in the grass next to them.
"Chicken?" Astrid asked, pulling a piece from the bowl sitting on the ground between her and Jack. Lira nodded, she hadn't noticed how late it was.
"Anyway," Hiccup spoke to Astrid, "I was wondering if you would let Lira use Stormfly to practice flying. That way when Blue's wing is fixed she can start riding with us right away."
Jack interrupted, "Wait, the dragon they found is going to be yours?"
He laughed maniacally, "Mom and dad are gonna freak! You can't bring a dragon back to Burgess."
Lira stopped eating for a second and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. She hadn't thought about it, having to return to Burgess. Jack was right, she couldn't take a dragon to the colonies and her parents wouldn't like her to own her own dragon. They probably weren't comfortable that the Vikings were getting along with dragons in the first place. Mary's probably just keeping quiet so that they're further accepted into the social events of the town. (She had such a huge obsession with popularity, she was always trying to be liked by everyone and not sully their good family name; in all honesty, she did a pretty good job making the Halli's seem like the perfect family.) Dragons were the reason Mary and Thaddeus left Berk in the first place, it wouldn't be surprising for them to not enjoy the company of the scaly creatures.
Lira hung her head realizing how ignorant she'd been to think she could own her own dragon. Hiccup rested a hand on her shoulder, "I still think it's worth it to learn, then she can ride whenever you come back."
"I'm fine with teaching her how to fly," Astrid responded. Hiccup opened his mouth as if to say something but Astrid carried on, "But Jack makes a good point, usually there are years between your visits and... well... I just don't think it's fair to Blue to be attached to an owner that only comes for a year every grand once and awhile."
Lira knew Astrid was right it wasn't fair of her to keep Blue from an owner that would be with him all the time. Even if she learned to fly and Blue healed quickly she doubted she'd have more than half a year before she'd have to leave with her family.
"I don't think Blue wants to be with anyone else," Hiccups rebuttal seemed like it was for Astrid but he made sure to look Lira in the eyes when he said it, "The connection between a dragon and a rider can't be decided by societal rules, and I should know that better than anyone."
Lira smiled a bit, in a 'thanks Hiccup' kind of way. His hand ran down her arm.
Astrid looked back to Lira, "Of course I'll teach you how to ride."
"Oh actually, I just wanted to barrow Stormfly and I'll teach."
"Don't be dumb, You have to help fix Blue's wing or Lira will never get to ride him. I'll teach her."
Hiccup fell quiet.
"Good, it's settled. We can start right now if you want."
"I'd love to!"
Hiccup disappeared on Toothless to help Fishlegs and Gothi with Blue. Lira and Astrid headed down to the arena with Stormfly.
"Just put your hand on her nose so she can get to know you a bit," Astrid said standing casually behind her. Lira lifted the back of her hand to Stormfly's nose tip. Lira noticed Stormfly was much more twitchy than Blue. Her head twitched left and right and left again. Her tail flicked like Blue's had when he was nervous. Lira noticed the flick and looked back at Astrid who seemed to not notice the twitch. Lira then assumed this was just another difference between Blue and Stormfly. Stormfly may be the same type of dragon as Blue but their personalities differed greatly. Suddenly Lira missed Blue, Stormfly was a beautiful dragon but she wasn't even close to who Lira wanted. But this wasn't about Lira having her first flight with Blue- It's about her learning to do that.
