Chapter 6

Anna disappeared as soon as we got here to find this Gilbert kid so we can get Jonathan’s journal, anything else we need, open the tomb to get Anna’s mother, and then get the hell out of this town. I’ve been hanging around the snack table with a guy named Alaric. He seemed nice when I first saw him, but then I noticed the wooden stake inside of his jacket. Now I have been sticking to him like glue, just to make sure that he doesn’t try to pull anything. He’s either hunting down me or one of my brothers.

“So, I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how old are you?” Alaric asks as I take another sip of this shitty punch. I shake my head. “Seventeen.”

“Ah. Shouldn’t you be in school then? I haven’t seen you around in any classes.”

“I’m enrolling later this week. Why are you in Mystic Falls, Alaric?” I am tempted to compel an honest answer out of him, but if he’s a hunter I would bet money that he is drinking vervain like it’s water.

“I’m looking for someone,” Alaric says, and I strain to hear him over the blasting music. God, are they trying to make us all go deaf?

“His name’s Damon Salvatore. You wouldn’t happen to know him, would you?” I let out a dry laugh and set my punch cup down on the nearby snack table. I notice two girls look over at us. One has curly blonde hair and the other looks a lot like Emily Bennett. She’s probably a Bennett witch, so I make a mental note to steer clear of her. Emily is the only Bennett who has ever taken a liking to me. Every other hates me immediately after finding out how Emily saved me oh-so-long ago.

“I don’t believe that I ever truly introduced myself, Ric,” I hold out my hand to him. “My name is Kariana Salvatore. And, just so you know, I can see that vervain covered stake in your jacket and I would prefer you wouldn’t use it on me. If I were any danger to you, I would’ve killed you the minute I saw it.”

“You might want to hide it better, too. I hear that Damon will be here with my other brother, Stefan.” I add once Alaric doesn’t say anything. It is impossible to read his expression for a few seconds, but then to my surprise he smiles.

“Thanks for the tip,” He says with a laugh before tucking the stake further into his coat. I smile triumphantly when I realize that I just made my first friend here in Mystic Falls. If this guy is a trained hunter, he definitely is not a bad addition to Team Kariana!

“Speak of the devil,” I mumble when the gym doors open to reveal Damon, Stefan, and Ellen. Alaric and I watch them survey the room, and Ellen looks scared as she clings to Stefan’s arm.

Suddenly the girl with curly blonde hair is standing in front of us. “Hi, Mr. Saltzman!” Alaric smiles at her.

She turns towards me. “Did you say that your last name was Salvatore?”

“Yep,” I say, and I’m surprised to see a huge smile spread across this girl’s face. I try not to judge people, but this girl is a little bit too happy for me. She acts like she just got a brand new puppy every two seconds. “Why?”

“That means that you’re the chick that threatened Damon last night, right!” She didn’t really ask it, more so told me that I was this ‘chick’, but I nod my heads anyways. “And you are?”

“Caroline Forbes.”

“Kariana Salvatore.” I shake her hand, and I am even more surprised when she backs against the wall and leans next to me. “I like your dress, Ari!” She compliments me and my smile grows. “Wait, shoot. Can I call you that?” Caroline asks quickly, and I can’t help but laugh. “Of course.”

I have officially made two friends here in Mystic Falls. Aren’t I just a social butterfly tonight?

“As much as I love listening to the two of you make girl talk, I’ve got to go.” Alaric suddenly rushes away. I look to where he is going and I see Stefan and Damon running towards the exit. I can see Anna making her way over there too, but she’s hiding in the shadows. What the hell is going on?

“Sooo,” Caroline drags out the word and brings my attention back to her. “Me and my friend Bonnie are gonna go to the Grill and meet up with some friends. Wanna come with us?”

I glance back at the doorway and see all four of them have disappeared. Without giving it a second thought, I shrug and turn back to Caroline. I pick up my almost empty punch cup and down the rest of it before tossing it towards a nearby trash bin. Miraculously, it makes it in.

“Sure, this dance blows.”

“That’s because they didn’t have me on the committee!” Then Caroline begins to rant about how she has planned practically every social event in Mystic Falls since Kindergarten as we walk to the door.
