Chapter 3

September 25th, 1900

I run as fast as I can away from the pack of werewolves chasing me. I didn’t know what they were at first, but the mysterious man told me before he left. He did not even tell me his name, but his presence seemed to hold off the wolves for some odd reason.

Now they are back on my trail, and I can hear one of them howl at the full moon.

I can feel myself slowing down. I have not had a proper feeding in two days, so I am weak. Soon I am running only at human speed, and I already know that is not fast enough. I am still a long way’s away from where my friend Lily and I had been staying.

Lily is gone now. The mysterious man chose to only save me, so the werewolves took Lily and ran off.

Why did he have to leave?

Suddenly a wolf appears in front of me.  I hear a girl scream from nearby and both the wolf and I’s heads snap towards it. I recover from the sudden noise more quickly than the werewolf though, and I am able to push it off of me. I pull the bottle of wolf’s vane that the mysterious man gave to me from my pocket, pop off the cork, and throw the liquid at the wolf in front of me. It howls and falls back to the ground.

I take this as my opportunity to run again, and I sprint towards where I heard the girl’s scream come from. It isn’t long before I physically bump into her and the girl falls to the ground.

I let out a long breath when I sense that she is human. She will have to be my dinner tonight if I am going to outrun this pack of wolves. I hold out my hand for her to grab, and she surprisingly does. Oh, right, she does not know that I am a vampire. This girl probably just thinks that I was another human girl about to be attacked by a rabid wolf. God, she has no idea how little she knows about the world that she is living in.

The girl stands and looks up at me. I gasp and take a step back. “Katherine?”

“No, I am Eliza,” She corrects me. “Who is Katherine?”

“An old friend,” I answer as vaguely as possible in case it is Katherine pretending to be someone else. If it isn’t her, these two must be twins. They look exactly alike, and I remember what Katherine looks like down to every detail because she is the last thing that I saw before I fell to the ground dead.

“Oh, well are you alright?” Eliza asks, and I instinctively nod my head. She gives me a smile before she turns to head back to wherever she had come from, but I grab her wrist.

“Do not scream. This will not hurt, but I am starving!” I compel her before I sink my teeth into her neck. Eliza squirms under my grip, but that only makes me hold her tighter. I can see her skin getting paler as I suck more blood out. I usually do not drain my victims of all of their blood, but I am just so hungry tonight…

“I am so sorry, Eliza,” I mumble as I take the last of what is left. Eliza falls to the ground when I let go of her shoulders, and I wipe my mouth with the sleeve of my dress. I stare at her lifeless body for a few seconds before I sigh. Did I really have to do that? I could have drunk a lot, saved her, drank more, and then compelled her to forget this entire night and live on. But instead my vampire subconscious chose for me to end Eliza’s life.

As I stare at Eliza, I think more about Katherine. She was from Bulgaria, and I am in Greece right now. Is it possible that this girl is related to Katherine? No, the resemblance would not be this strong if they were simply related. Eliza was not a vampire either, so there is no way that they two of them are twins.

I rub my neck as I think. An angry vampire had snapped my neck earlier today because apparently I had killed her sister while I was in Italy, but I do not remember. Italy was a blur for me. I killed a lot of people last year, and that is why I have been cutting back this year. I don’t want to be known as a ripper, now, do I?
