Chapter 1- don't play with matches
There's a loud beep.
"Katie Matthews please report to the Principals office immediately."
I give my teacher a look to ask if I can leave in the middle of my exam and she nods before getting back to her reading. I sigh and make my way down the lonely halls, what have I done now?
Knock Knock.
"Come in." The voice belonging to my headteacher calls. The door creaks slightly as it's opened and I go to sit on my usual chair...but there's someone there.
"Katie just sit in the other chair for today please." He sighs, giving me a pleading look, I bet this isn't a normal 'we need to talk about your grades' chat.
"So what am I here for today Mr Bishop?" I ask, trying to sound polite knowing that the person sitting next to me is probably judging the both of us.
"Just wanting to introduce your new exchange student to their buddy." He smiles, but my mouth forms a little 'O' shape. "Katie meet Grayson, Grayson meet Katie Matthews, your new partner."
"Partner sounds a bit committal if you ask me, sir." I laugh slightly, trying to break the awkwardness that has settled in the room.
"Nobody asked you Katie. Now, introduce Grayson to the school. That's all, have a good day."
I pick my bag off of the floor and make my way out to the hall, not even looking at my exchange student.
"This is so damn unfair." I mumble to myself as I shut the door behind me. It took me a second to process that I just shut the door on my new 'friend'. "Oops." I say as the door opens as hoodie covered Grayson stands there giving me a look. Uh oh...guess there goes the whole idea of friendship.
"Sorry about that, I'm just so used to slamming the door on the way out." I hold my hand out, expecting to have his break the space between us. But his just stays by his side as the other holds his backpack in place. I quickly bring my hand back, shouldn't have done that. "Er, so what do you want to see?"
I think you and him can tell that I've never done this whole friendship thing before. Only once, and I'm fine with that.
He raises his head so that he's now looking around instead of at the floor and now I realise how beautiful my friend Grayson is. He looks at me and a breath escapes my lips. Shit.
"Maybe to the English area? Where's your next class?" He says, even his voice is really nice. Okay Katie, keep your pants on....
"Er, yeah English is maths and later Shakespeare." Smooth girl. Real freaking smooth.
He raises his eyebrow in confusion and laughs a little.
"So let me guess, we have maths next but we can see the English block as they're studying Shakespeare?" He asks, well at least he can form real sentences.
I nod and he smiles down at me, a smile forms on my face as we make our way down to the classrooms.

"See you tomorrow I guess." I say as I turn around to walk home, but instead, I hear footsteps getting closer and realise he's following me...
"What do you want?" I state, a little too rudely as we both stop walking.
"I'm staying at your place."
"What?" What does he mean he's staying with me and my family?
"Did you not know? You should read more into this whole exchange student stuff before signing up you know." He says with a smug look across his face.
"I never asked to have you."
I walk away, but don't hear anyone following.
"Oh well, his loss." I shrug and keep on walking home. Home sweet home. Or at least that's what I thought...
I start to place the keys into the key hole but the door swings open and my angry looking mother is glaring at me. So much for relaxing.
"Inside now."
I sigh as I follow the woman in front of me into the living room and sit down on the sofa, opposite her and my new friend that I ditched in the park on the way home.
"Why did you leave Grayson in the streets?"
"Leave him in the streets? Ha ha that's funny. He was walking with me mum, maybe I walked a little to quickly?" I lie, but she doesn't buy it. Grayson just plays with the edge of the sofa, obviously feeling awkward.
"Uh huh, okay Katherine, whatever you say. Go upstairs and make the spare bedroom for him."
"Fine." I groan as I go upstairs. Footsteps follow me. Of course they're following me.
I get to his room and place the sheets on his bed. I turn around to go and get extra pillows but instead I walk into a muscular chest...Grayson. He steadies me by holding me in his arms, but then releases me after I stop wobbling.
"Just wanted to check my room out." He grins.
"It's not yours. How long are you here for?"
"Three to six months."
THREE TO SIX MONTHS? I cannot deal with that knuckle head for one school day, imagine half a year?! I need God.
"Problem with that Katherin?" He mocks.
"Yes actually." I push past, walking towards my own room and slam the door behind me. I go over to my bed and pull out my phone. In less than 10 seconds, I'm scrolling through Instagram, liking and commenting on celebrity posts. Joking, I just watched Dan and Phil on You Tube.
Knock Knock.
I roll my eyes about to tell whoever it is to go away, but they beat me.
"Katie can we talk?" I don't move, but I know he's growing impatient because he lightly knocks again. "Please?"
"What about?" I question without removing my gaze from the phone screen.
"Us." There's silence.
"Don't place me in a one worded sentence. There is no 'us' Grayson, so don't put me in a category." He doesn't say anything but I can tell that he's still waiting by the door. "If there's no us Grayson, then what you want to talk about is irrelevant."
There's another silence.
"Don't make me tell your mum."
With that, and a little effort, I sulked out of bed and opened the door to Grayson with a sheepish grin on his face. He knows he's won. However, I don't let him in the room, I block the doorway with a wide stance and hands out touching either wall.
"Let me in please Ka-"
"Nope. Give me a real reason as to why you should be allowed into my chamber."
"Chamber? What are we? Shakespeare?"
"Oh Grayson, Oh Grayson. Why the hell thou here Grayson?" I smile cheekily.
He lifts his hands to reveal three bottles of some sort of alcoholic beverage and a packet of cigarettes.
"Wanna get to know me?" He suggests. "I'm just going to need a lighter, or matches."
I stand there shocked at the suggestion, my mum's gone out for an hour or two so the cigarette smoke will clear by then, and well, she won't talk to us when she gets back, she has her own life.
"First things first," I begin. "We don't play with matches in this house."
