The parents are careless, or never around.

Example:

I look around. Mom and Dad literally didn't see my huge mess from last night. The party...what happened? I'm pretty sure almost everyone got crazy drunk. I should have remembered! Mom and Dad were gone for years, and last night was the night I picked?

"Mom?!" I call. I hear a bathroom door open.

"Yes sweetness?" She calls back. I sigh. She's about to pound me.

"Can I go to the mall with Lizzy?" I ask, getting out of the house is better.

"Sure!"

"Then I'll run away to Paris with my new online boyfriend, who's thirty and I haven't met him, and we'll have lots of kids! But we'll be fine, he has a farm. He says it's not your typical farm though..." I yell.

"Have fun! See you soon," Mom says, and I squeal. I can't wait.

Why it's annoying/needs to stop:

Really, you'll let me run away to Paris with someone? Do a reality check! Most parents wouldn't let you stay home for a year or more by yourself (Unless you are 18 or over) let alone go to Paris by yourself to meet this person online! If you want the parents to be less involved in their child's life, then there are other ways to do it.

How to fix it:

Don't go to the extreme, easy fix. If your character is not an only child, try having their parents wrapped up in the MC's sibling's life. If they are an only child, have their parents wrapped up in work. But no parent, would EVER do that.
