Dream Arc - Chapter Seven
Prophecy and Curse↠◆↞
Mizushina Yume
Another day, another dream.
It's always been like this ever since I was little. Sometimes I feel numb when I have these dreams.
Sometimes I suffocate.
Today was both.
I can't breathe.
I can't feel my body.
It's like I was frozen. Then I saw a figure standing in the distance. I couldn't see clearly, everything was vague. One part of me recognized that person, but I just couldn't make out who it was.
Though numb, I walked closer towards it and I saw an ominous grin plastered on its face.
The grin grew wider as its appearance started to be more clear to see.
When I first saw this figure, I thought of a shadow of a child. It was small and short, but not very short like a five or ten year old. After I saw the grin, the figure grew taller. For a moment, I thought it might grow taller than me.
It kept grinning on me as I felt my entire body cold. I couldn't walk away from me as my spine tingled. I swallowed hard as I could feel my heart pound.
"Yume," it called with its deep, anonymous voice. I swallowed once more as fear overcame me.
"Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume. Yume!"
It kept calling me desperately yet I sensed hatred in its tone. It was then I felt something cold grabbed my ankle. I looked down and dozens of cold, bony hands reached out to me, grabbing each part of my body tight.
The hands grabbed wrists then stomach and legs before pulling me down to the pool of the unknown darkness.
"What? No! No, please!" I screamed out.
I can feel myself losing to the darkness. Pain and agony rushed through my body and I started to suffocate even more than before. For a moment, I thought I was drowning because I felt something filling up in my lungs.
With my eyes half opened, I tried reaching out for something. I thought that if I kept reaching out, someone or something will come save me. But I was wrong.
Someone grabbed me by the neck, choking me. I felt its sharp nails digging in my neck as if it tried to rip my neck off my body. I saw the hand but I couldn't see who was trying to kill me.
"Yume," it called out again. It was the same voice I heard before.
I grabbed the wrist as I tried to push it away. I resisted and fought it but the hand won't come off. I knew that it was all a dream and yet why was I so scared that I'll actually die?
As I fought the strange being who is still trying to kill me, I saw the figure coming close. I hear footsteps right in front of me and that person came to light.
No.
It can't be—
Why?
Why is the feeling of sadness and betrayal washing over me when I don't know who that person is?

I woke up, panting and sweating in my pajamas.
I looked at the window next to me. It was already morning and Izanami was sitting at the window sill with the window opened and with her smoking. It took me a moment to realize that the dream was over and I was back to the real world.
"You overslept," she said as she blew a lump of smoke from her mouth. "Though its Saturday, it's quite rare to see you wake up at 9 am."
I wiped my left eye with my palm and groaned. My memories of that dream —or nightmare— became vague and I can barely remembered what happened.
"Had a nightmare," I told her. "A horrible one, at that."
"So it would seem." She said.
Izanami put down her smoking pipe and sat next to me. In times like this, she would often ask for details regarding the dream I had but she didn't. She just sat next to me and stared at the morning light outside the window.
"Izanami?" I called out to her.
She turned her head towards me, a blank look painted on her face. She looked down for a moment before she stood up and grabbed her pipe.
"Yume," she said. "Forget everything you know and embrace the truth. Your dreams are about to become reality."
