CHAPTER 9

“You will not do this alone,” Jay said.

Yes he will not do it alone….alone? WHAT? Thought Teg.

“I can’t believe you are actually…” Said Tegan.

“You’ll have to.” replied Jayden.

She looked at the other two for help. No, they all wanted answers too. Sigh guess they won’t leave this alone.

What do they want to know!? Well it’s just a coincidence that we all have strange powers and that we were adopted by some group of people we don’t even know. So what?

It’s stupid when she said that to herself.

Oh and yes they got shot right in front of our eyes and one of them is alive and is arrested. And there was the woman with red lipstick who killed them all but didn’t kill them all. Oh and just for the record we still haven’t found her yet. So what? Not like we were trying to but I’m curious. 

“So what?” She thought out loudly but not so loud that they could hear her. Boy, she was thankful.

So what my foot, Crap I really do care.

“What’s the plan?” She asked finally.

--Will’s POV—

Wow we are really doing this. We’re waiting outside now. Ace comes out of the garage in his car. Jay sits in the front and I’m sitting between Teg and Zaddy.

Nobody talks until we reach the central jail. I expected the reporters to be flooded around but no we were lucky. We went inside with Jay leading us. Seeing Jay’s back makes me think about him. How he came here just to prevent Zade from using his powers. He’s one heck of a guy.

We enter and stand in front of an officer’s desk.

“Yes can I help you all?” He said.

“What is a good-looking bunch like this doing here?” One of the guards whispered to the other. Only Tegan could hear that. She controls the air around her to make the sound waves travel to her direction. I was standing beside her, so I heard it too.

“We’re here to see Sofia Drew.” Jayden said.

“Oh ofcourse that rich lady.” The same guard whispered again like he was stupid for missing out something so obvious.

“Are you a relative?” The officer asked. The officer sipped his coffee. He keeps it back on the table. He’s picking up a file but in doing so he hits his cup from the back of his hand. The cup is falling down, halfway there but it doesn’t…..it stops….

In mid air.

“Did you do that Tegan?” I ask staring at the frozen scene.

“No” she says breathlessly.

I look around, everything’s frozen. The guards whispering to each other; outside the birds, an old man with a stick, a woman’s dress and her hairdo being attacked by the wind, a man looking at his watch. I’m sure the watch must have stopped too.

Clap clap clap

“Took you long enough.” A melodious female voice said. We all waited for her to come outside. It was Sofia.

Looking at our bewildered faces she laughed and said “You’re all probably wondering what’s happening.” She gave a pause. A pause so long that I could’ve punched her if she wasn’t Zade’s foster mom and if I weren’t such a nice guy.

“Gentlemen and lady—“She winked at Tegan. Tegan stiffened.

“This here—“She gestured the surrounding in a feminine way, “is an illusion. All that you saw from the morning was just something that I set up. Did you like my little game?”

Zade swore under his breath.

“You all must be pros by now! How are you guys?” She said pleasantly. Okay I will punch her.

“Excuse me? Pros? Of what?” Asked Ace, the first one to interact with Sofia till now.

“Oh don’t be silly Ace darling! You know what I’m talking about!” She says this blissfully.

“No we don’t, don’t mess with our heads again, now spit out what you’re trying to say because I’m growing impatient.” Said Ace, his eyes blazing with fire.

She seemed to like him more now. “Oh Ferbos must be so proud of you!”

This takes back Ace.

“Ferbos? My foster dad?” Ace tried to still look angry but he was distracted.

“Yes you’re right. He thinks you are the most gifted.” She said smiling warmly.

“He ‘thinks’? Present tense? What the hell’s happening? Is this some kind of a sick joke? And by gifted if you mean having special powers then you should be disappointed because we don’t use our powers and we never will!” Tegan breathes out what she had been holding back.

“My my check your anger scale my dear. Oh so you don’t use your powers? How sad. You all have the failed the test. This was the first and the most important one.” She said disapprovingly.

“Test? Listen Sofia drew, is that even your name? YOU TELL US WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW OR WE WALK OUT!” yelled Tegan.

I must say I’m enjoying the new side of Tegan.

Sofia sighs, “Okay okay, first of all, yes I am Sofia and about the test…..let me just show you a….”

“Oh no you won’t!” I shouted but I was too late.

It was like watching a document in 4D. A female robotic voice narrates and shows things on screen.

Ace you have an affinity for fire. This power was discovered when you were 3 years old. You melted the toys you had just by holding on to them for too long. You turned the teddy bears into ashes in just seconds. Ferbos Garne was determined to make you his ward the day he heard about you. He decided to adopt you that day and bribed the people of the adoption house to keep their mouth shut.

The screen showed a 3 year old blonde baby unknowingly melting the plastic of the toy and enjoying it.

Ace gasps.

Will when you were 5 years old you fell into a lake. They thought you died. But after a week you came back and they got so scared that they called you a ghost. You were alive for those 7 days in the water. You felt happy and contentment. Noah Pedom, your adopter, made sure the house you stayed in had lots of fountains and pools. He wanted you to be a successful strange being. Your affinity is water.

The screen showed a five year old inside the lake, moving around the seaweed, trying to catch the tiniest fish and successful in doing so.

Don’t remind me thinks Will.
