The only thing I remember from that day was the screaming echoing through my head and a harsh slap delivered to my cheek as I was dragged away.

Now, it's getting fuzzier and fuzzier, that memory. I sat down on the ground and sighed. The orphanage wasn't big, it was enough to fit at most ten people. The caretaker was nice, a sweet old lady who loved to play the piano with her husband.

Well, I'm the oldest here, 17 years of age. I help around the orphanage, feeding the younger ones, assisting the caretaker with laundry, chores, and such.

I wasn't really expecting the Chairman of the Hirahara Corporation to come in. Poor Mrs. White was scared out of her mind when he wandered in.

"Mr. Hirahara!" she exclaimed, "What can I do for you today?"

"I'm looking for a child to adopt. Why else would I be here?" he said coldly. Mrs. White visibly flinched.

"Let me show you around." I walked away to the kitchen and continued to wash the dishes.

"...and this is the oldest here, (Y/N)." I turned, taking off my gloves ad drying my hands.

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Hirahara," I said, bowing slightly. He just stood there and stared. After a few seconds of looking at me, he turned to Mrs. White and cleared his throat.

"I'd like to adopt Miss (Y/N)."

"A-Alright, I'll get the papers for you. You can get to know (Y/N) more while I'm gone." Mrs. White then left the room. I looked at the man blankly and gestured to the couch.

"Would you like to sit down, sir?" I asked, getting two teacups and pouring some herbal tea in. He nodded and sat down.

"Tell me a bit about yourself, Miss (Y/N)."

"Just (Y/N) is fine," I butted in, setting the two ready cups with a clink down on the table. He looked at the cups and raised a brow. I noticed that and took my cup, smiling a bit.

"Don't worry, I didn't put any poison in it or anything, Mr. Hirahara," I chuckled, taking a sip of my drink. He smiled a bit and put the cup to his lips and drank.

"Well, to answer the question you asked before," I replied, crossing my legs, "I'm 17 as of this year. I help around the orphanage, and play and feed the kids and toddlers. Mrs. White is a loving, caring auntie for us all and we're really happy with her."

The man nodded and set his cup down. I hesitated for a bit until I asked my question.

"If I may, Mr. Hirahara," I said.

"Go ahead, you probably have a lot of questions."

"Why did you decide to adopt me, and why from here?" I saw the man chuckle a bit.

"I've always wanted a girl in the family. My wife and I tried two times, but they were both boys. We're truly proud of them... Though I'm sometimes a little indifferent to them, I have to admit.

"So I came here, in search for a young woman who was about their age. But I didn't want a daughter who was childish and irresponsible, and unwilling to do her part in the family.

"However I found you, and I knew that our family would be delighted for a new addition because of you." I blushed a bit and smiled.

"Thank you for telling me, Mr. Hirahara."
