Whispers could be heard as I walked through the busy New York streets. Today, is my father's birthday and I wanted to surprise him with my presence. I haven't seen my father since the year 1795 at the age of 13 years old. It was now 1797 and I was 15 years old.
Men were eyeing me left and right so I stood straight up looking poise and elegant. I knew why they were staring at me. I was never before seen in Manhattan and I was walking with flowers. The flowers of course were for my father but they didn't need to know that. I smiled at different men giving them flirtatious looks. New York was different from Virginia and if I was going to stay, I needed to be bolder like my father.
One man walked towards me secretly handing me a calling card. I slide the card into the folds of my dress hiding it from the public. I keep walking pretending like the interaction didn't happen. I was nearing my father's work place and my hands started to shake. I was nervous to see my father after the long years apart.
The office doors were suddenly in front of me and I took a deep breath. My father was always a stern man and stress did not help his grumpy mood. He could be fun and daring but that was before he became vice president of our brand-new nation.
I make my way through the office finding a lovely white waiting room. I was invited here by President Adams. He was very big on the idea of 'family before work'.
A man came walking through the nearby hallway stopping as he looked at me.
"Hello, I'm Delilah Jefferson. I was invited here by President John Adams," I politely say as I curtsy at the powerful looking man in front of me.
"Yes, President Adams has requested for you to be sent to his office to discuss your fathers time off." He says monotone, "Follow me, if you will?"
I nod at the man following him down different hallways until reaching another white door. The man knocks waiting for an answer.
A soft, "Come in," can be heard from inside the room. The man bows to me as he opens the door. Like I was some kind of queen...I thought we were done with that bullshit. The man nods his head for me to go inside. I walk in and the door instantly closes behind me. I jump at the sound of the door clicking close.
A joyful man sat at his desk. He stood excitedly seeing my arrival. He was short about 5'7 with blue eyes and brown hair turning gray with age. He looked well rested and cleaned. Quite the opposite of what former President Washington looked like during his years of presidency. I guess it was true what they say 'Abigail is our president not Mr. Adams.'
He walks towards me embracing me tightly. I tense at his informal greeting becoming very uncomfortable with a short chubby man clinging onto me.
"President Adams how nice to meet you," I kindly say trying to uncling him from my body. He chuckles at my reaction as he finally releases my frail body.
"I guess people in the South aren't as open as we are in the North." He laughs. I awkwardly laugh with him desperately trying to stay elegant and proper like my father taught me but he was making it hard. He was so touchy and rather creepy on how much energy a 62 year old man could have.
"I guess so sir," I say with the fakest smile I have ever done.
"Well let's talk about your father," He says turning around skipping back to his desk. This man was very unprofessional and rather not fit to be President of the United States of America but who am I to judge I am only 15 years old, not nearly old enough to dictate that sort of thing.
"Yes, I would like that," I say taking a seat in front of his desk.
"I am going to have to force your pops to take a leave for his birthday as he is very hard working," President Adams start, "I feel he has lost the meaning of family. I'll have to convince him that I will survive without him. Him and my wife do most of my work! So as a thank you I want you two to catch up."
