"Father! I'm going into town," I yell as I run down the staircase. My father emerges out of the other room and steps in front of me.
"Sorry darling but I told you about our plans with the Hamilton's tonight," My father informs me with his hands on his hips.
"Yes, you did but it's not for another few hours," I try to reason with him. I grab his arms and take them off of his hips.
"Well I don't know if I can trust you to be home on time. This is an important meeting and I need you to be on your best behavior," He lectures. He places his hands back on his hips not giving into my playful tricks.
"I promise I will be back on time!" I beg as I clasp my hands together in a pleading way.
"Delilah," My father whines, "I can't afford you to mess this up."
"I won't! Father please," I beg him as I bounce up and down with my hands still clasped together.
"Don't make me regret this, Delilah," He sighs closing his eyes as he exhales out the words. I sequel and hug him tightly.
"Thank you father thank you so much," I sequel as I bounce up and down into the embrace.
"Okay okay Delilah go before I change my mind," My father warns. I pull away quickly and run towards the door with many giggles mixing with the sound of my heals clicking. I open the front door and I quickly wave to my father with a wide smile. He laughs softly and returns the wave. I close the door and practically sprint down into the town.
I reach the local market and I hum to myself in amusement. The baskets were filled with fresh fruit. I scope around looking for the biggest, plumpest, and freshest fruit in the market. I find a plump deep-yellow grapefruit. I go to pick it up when someone snatches it before me. I look up to see a young girl. She wore a dirty dress and had smudges all over her face.
"Hello sweetie may I please have that grapefruit your holding?" I ask her sweetly. She shakes her head shyly and turns away from me. I huff in anger at my grapefruit being taken. I turn around from her to look for a different snack to eat. Nothing, in this store was as good as the grapefruit the young girl had. I feel a tug on my dress and I turn around to see the little girl. The grapefruit was gone.
"Sweetie where did you put that grapefruit?" I ask her. She shrugs and walks away from me. She joins a young boy about her age. They both watch me as I roam the store. I swear I can see a evil smirk on the boys face while the girl just watches me with a distant look. I ignore the kids and continue to shop. I walk out of the market only to be stopped by a pudgy man.
"Where do you think you are going?" He asks with nasty tone. I stop and stare at the man.
"Excuse me?" I ask him.
"I know you are stealing a grapefruit. I can see it falling out of the folds of your dress," He says in a point blank type tone.
"Why would I need to steal?" I ask him, "I mean my clothes are enough to prove that I am rather wealthy."
"You probably stole that gown too," He presumes. I scoff at him and try to move by his big body.
"Pay up honey," He purrs. I stomp on his foot but he only grabs my wrists. I struggle against him as he pulls out the grapefruit that the little girl took from me. I look over at them and the boy snickers but the girl just stares at me with a blank stare.
"I'm being framed!" I yell as I try to pull away from his ugly body.
"Your not from around here?" He snickers, "from the south right? Those dirty southerns thinkin they can just control us."
