The rumbling of thunder echoed in the room. The room lit up for a few seconds before returning back to it's original darkness. Amelia was standing by the window, looking at the dark sky and the rain that had been continuously pouring for the past 2 hours. It seemed to her as if it would rain forever. It kind of reminded her of her life that hadn’t seen much sunshine in it.At that moment, the door to her room creaked open jolting her out of her thoughts and a small girl with big frightened blue eyes appeared. The girl opened her mouth to speak and at that exact time the thunder echoed again. She quickly ran towards Amelia and clutched her legs tightly.
“I- I am s-scared. Please let me stay with you, mom.”
Amelia smiled at her daughter and picked her up in her arms. She carried her to bed and laid her down. Laying down beside her, she gently ran her hands in her shoulder-length blonde hair. She was definitely the sunshine in her rainy life.
“There is nothing to be afraid of, Lily. I am here and I will always be. Now turn that frown upside down and show Mama your big smile.” Lily smiled at her mom but it was a forced and pained smile.
Amelia chuckled slightly and asked, “Would you like to hear a story?”
This definitely lifted up her spirits. “Yes! Yes! Jack and the beanstalk!”
“You already know the whole story and you have listened to it a thousand times. How about I tell you another one?”
Upon seeing her eager eyes, Amelia began her story. “Ok...Once upon a time, there was a girl named Mel and a boy named Lucas. Mel really really liked him and thus, she wanted to be with him forever. She felt like he was the only person who understood her. They were just meant to be together.."
“M-mom, why are you crying!? Please don't cry or I'll cry too!” Lily said while sobbing.
Amelia placed her right hand on her cheek to find out that she really was crying. She wondered why she was telling her daughter this stuff when she had closed this chapter of her life a long time ago. Closed it? She wanted to laugh. She has never been able to close it, those memories of her life will always stay with her and haunt her. She was afflicted by her own choices and they had now put her in a never-ending anguish and depair. She was definitely stressed and she needed something to make her feel normal again.
She just needed to...
She snapped out of her thoughts before they went haywire.
Taking a deep breath, she spoke,“I am not crying, Lily, I am just a bit tired. I will be okay after a little sleep.” She let out a fake yawn to add an emphasis that what she said was true. Lily frowned a bit at her mother's excuse. She was only 7 years old but she was a sharp child. She could tell that her mother had some other reason to cry but she kept quiet.
"Promise you'll be okay?", Lily asked worriedly as she tilted her head to look at Amelia.
“I promise. Now go to sleep, hun. Mom’s got office tomorrow morning, remember?”, Amelia reminded her daughter as she took the huge blanket and wrapped them both in it.
“Goodnight, mom.” Lily said with a small smile.
"Goodnight, Lily!"
And after 15 minutes, Amelia finally felt her consciousness fading away and sleep consuming her mind and body. The last thing she heard was her daughter saying “Lucas will com...” but she was never able to hear the whole sentence as she had already fallen asleep.
