"We all have our secrets."Bastille & Naughty Boy
(The only chapter not in MC POV)
"I need you to find someone for me, Sammy."
"Find someone? Dad, we've been trying to find you!" Sam Winchester shouted at his father through the phone as he avoided his older brother's gaze. "Dad! Talk to me. Tell me what is going on!"
"We don't have time for this." His father snapped, his tone harsh even though he had been pushing back the guilt of abandoning his two grown sons. "This is bigger than you think. They are everywhere. Even us talking right is not safe."
"No!" he shouted back. "Alright?! No way!"
"Give me the phone," Dean demanded as he reached forward, but as soon as he heard his father start to rip into the younger Winchester, he fell back onto the lumpy motel mattress and listened in silence.
"I've given you an order, dammit. Now you stop following me, and you do your damn job! Do you understand me?"
Sam sat slack-jawed, not all that surprised that his father used that tone with him. It wasn't like they ever truly got along, especially since his father didn't even know he had been back from law school until just now.
Dean lurched towards his younger brother and yanked the phone from his hand while Sam sat shirtless, staring at the muted conversation his brother overtook as the realization set in.
His father wasn't coming back, and he didn't want their help.
"Dad, it's me," Dean said anxiously. "Where are you?"
Sam tried his hardest to hear his father's words, but Dean tucked the phone tightly between his ear and shoulder as he rummaged through the nightstand, looking for a pen. Sam honestly didn't even care at this point, and he rolled his eyes as Dean played the good soldier, answering every question with a yes sir and nodding as if his father could see him.
Sam thought it was disgusting.
"Dad?" Dean was sure he didn't just hear the call drop. "Dad?"
Sam looked over at his brother and watched as he tossed the cellphone back on the table.
"He hung up."
"Of course he did," Sam mumbled as Dean threw the sheet off his half-naked body and swung his legs over the side. "Who does he want us to hunt down now?"
Dean held out the napkin, and Sam plucked it from his beat-up hands as he yawned.
"Who the hell is Andi King?"
Dean rubbed his tired eyes and kept his gaze on the whiskey bottle he had emptied last night.
"Dad's new partner."
