I was woke up only an hour later to my mom shaking me. I opened my eyes and noticed she looked really, really nervous. I looked behind her to see a few people I'd never seen before watching us from the hall.
"Mom, what's wrong?" I asked, getting out of bed and stretching.
"Nothing, we just need to move. Later today, we have to go to town and listen to those nice people in the hall way talk to everyone from town." she answered, but I knew it was more then that. Her voice shook a little when she talked, and she looked close to tears. I'd never seen my mom scared before, so this had to be bad. I nodded, not trusting my voice, wanting to look strong. Even just to her. She nodded her head back and left, closing my door. I changed to a tee and jean shorts before going down stairs, walking slowly to make sure I had to deal with the new people as little as possible. They had looked like any person, but in super fancy buisness suits that no one today could afford unless they were extremely rich or worked for the right peolpe. I let out a breath of air I hadn't noticed I was holding in when I realized the people were no longer there. But then I had to gasp. My mother was hysterically crying into my dads shoulder as he was trying to hold in tears himself. They were both on the older side, so if the war WAS here, we all knew they really wouldn't have a chance. I looked down giving them as much privacy as I could as I walk past to get to the toast. They both watched me, making me feel self-concious.
"Sweetheart, no matter what happens, you'll be safe. Don't ever forget that." my mom whispered before pulling from my dad to go to her room. I heard the door close and then sobbing from the other side, I felt a pang in my chest, and I was overwhelmed with the feeling to cry. 'No, I have to stay strong. I'll be okay. I'll be okay' I thought to myself over and over again until the feeling went away. My dad stayed to watch for a few minutes longer before walking off to the back room. I heard the radio turn on as he listened to it, but all that was on was more news of the war. Eventually, he turned it off. I heard the door open, then close again, signaling he went outside. A few hours later, we all started walking to the heart of town holding hands, me inbetween them. When we got to town, I was surprised. Everyone was standing in the middle of main street, looking at a little stand that stood there. I saw my band teacher, Mr. Beash fixing the mic stands and my friend Lenny helping him. From behind, someone poked me, pulling my attention from the stage. Looking back, I saw a Gee, though there was no usual smile on her face, only dried tear streaks. Letting go of my parents hands, I turned all the way and gave her a hug. No words were spoken, but she had deperation and fearful waves coming off her body, silently telling me what she was feeling. A little ways away, Kat saw us, and ran for us. It became a group hug, and both Gee and Kat started quietly crying. As much as I had wanted to, I held the tears in and just hugged them both, whispering things like it'll be ok, and don't worry, and I love you guys. When we heard someone tapping the mics, we finally let go of eachother and turned to see the people in suits on stage, though there were alot more. One of them stepped forward. She had blonde hair, blue eyes, and the fakest, most strained smile I had ever seen.
"I would just like to start with saying this is the greatest honor. To be all the way out here to see all of you. Now, as you know of course, we are at war. Better Living Industries has, I am happy to say, signed off, and now this town can be truely protected." She started. I felt like I was hearing nails on a chalkboard, the way that she was talking. She had the voice that made everyone internally cringe, whether we wanted to or not.
"And I am here with my collegues to help you all through the transition. Starting bright and early tomorrow morning at 8, we will be taking you from your homes to take you to our secure and protected moving location, where you will then moved by train to our location in California!" she said, trying to get excitment from us. But we all weren't stupid. We heard the 'taken from your homes' part. Only a retard would tell small town country folk they had to leave their homes whether they wanted to. I saw some people whispering to eachother while the blonde bimbo on stage looked around a little confused. She cleared her throat loudly till the whispering to stop before continuing.
"I realize alot of you don't want to leave. That is why we are allowing you to bring one item per person to bring with you, so you never have to forget this lovely place. That is all." she said before turning from the mic and leading all the fancy people off stage. I turned to Gee and Kat so see my mask of taken abackness mirrored in their faces. Only one item?! I was gonna bring my entire room I was allowed to. Just when I was about to ask what they thought, the speaker started blaring some awesome music. I grinned at the girls, and we all started spontaniously dancing, though we were the only ones. The music was rock, and that was greatly looked down upon, though we three said fuck it a long time ago. When the song ended, we heard a mans voice. He talked about the zones, and fighting against BL/Ind. Immediatly, the fancy people were swarming the stage again, yelling for Mr. Beash to get rid of it. When he did, they blonde told us that was just a group of people that were definetly gonna get themselves killed, and that there was nothing to worry about, that BL/Ind. was the good place, they were the enemy. Gee nudged me and handed me a piece pof paper then walked away like nothing happened. I shrugged my shoulders, telling myself I'd read it when I got home. Both of my parents were quiet in their own thoughts, probably thinking of what they were gonna bring. I was intent on bringing a teddy bear that I had gotten from a friend. When we got home, I immediately ran upstairs and took out Gee's note from my pocket.
Hey, you know you liked that music. And you know what they said was more true then the buisness monkeys. When we get to cali.....you wanna come with me and Kat to find those guys? Out in the zones? We have no idea how or when or anything, but.....yea. Wanna? tell me tomorrow
-Gee
