Chapter 38
Gathering Defenses
"We have to warn everybody immediately!"
Tae and Jungkook were walking energetically down the frozen muddy streets towards the barriers of the rich neighborhood. Now, with all available army and police forces concentrated in there the only way to raise an effective town defense was to alarm that part of the city about the incoming danger and convince its leaders about the need of united actions against the vampires.
"If we make my father listen to us, the others will follow!" Taehyung kept repeating, completely absorbed by the images from the previous days, the thousand vampire traces in the snow, the vampire swarms passing just by them, the flying monsters. The more he kept thinking about that, the more certain he became that if the people didn't unite as fast as possible against the incoming danger they were all damned. The thought filled him completely with dread and some maddening feeling of urgency. He fastened his paste. They had no time to waste.
Jungkook was following him silently, a sharp and serious expression on his, face. He looked equally lost in his own gloomy thoughts.
"And just where do you think you two are going?" A raspy voice interrupted.
The mocking loud sound made both friends stop startled in their tracks. The way ahead was blocked by a group of men, all wearing black masks covering the lower half of their faces, knives and pistols in their hands.
Jungkook's heart jumped in his chest. He too had a pistol in his inner pocket and if he was fast enough he could take out one or two of the men, but he certainly had no chance against that many. He counted eight in front of them, blocking the narrow alley. Only three were holding guns though, maybe if he managed to shoot these one first?! The thought was desperate... His attention turned towards Tae. The concentrated expression on his face showed that similar frantic calculations were passing through his own head. His jaw was clenched hard and his eyes were passing quickly from one to another in attempt to find a way out of this.
"We have to pass through..." Tae tried, his voice higher than usual, his hands stretched forward, palms up, as if trying to explain an executioner his innocence. "You don't understand..."
"It is you who don't understand, boy." The man in the center made a few steps forward, lifting up his gun and pointing it forward towards Taehyung's chest. "We are going to be paid a handsome reward if we just put some bullet holes in your heart or belly... Or maybe the head, how does that sound? Huh?" The man almost giggled at the thought. It seemed the idea amused him. "Now, how easy is that? Probably the easiest work ever..." The man aimed the gun and a hollow click sounded in the air when the bullet glided in its place.
"I would think twice before pulling that trigger, if I were you!" Jungkook swiftly moved and stepped in front of Tae, covering him with his own body. "Why don't you stop and listen to us before you shoot us down for a reward you may never use..."
