I looked at Travis and broke into a big smile. "Let's run."
He looked at me like I was insane, then a smile crept on his face. "You're crazy as hell."
I grabbed his hand and he shook his head disapprovingly. "It will be fun. It's something we have never done. It will make a good story."
The sheriff was coming closer and I looked at Travis begging him to do this. He held firm and wouldn't let me move. I growled under my breath as the sheriff was now in front of us.
"Who are you kids?" He asked again.
"I'm Travis Hart and this is Macy White, sir." He said.
"What are you two doing out here?" The sheriff asked with a smirk.
"Well-um." I didn't really know what to say.
"We're actually traveling down memory lane. This was our elementary before it was shut down. We're going to college in a month." Travis provided a sufficient answer.
"I hate to do this to you kids, but this isn't public property anymore. You guys knew this, and that is against the law. We're gonna have to take you to the station to fill out some paperwork. For now, you are under arrest."
The other cops finally came into my view and I watched as they slammed the handcuffs on Travis. He jerked away. I realized how bad it must've hurt. They came to me, and I let them put them on me but then I started to get mad.
"This is ridiculous!" I shouted. "This is an elementary school!"
"Um, Sheriff. This boy has a flask filled with moonshine." The cop looked slightly unsure and Travis's eyes went wide.
"Kids." He looked at us disapprovingly.
"We aren't even kids, my God. We are 18! We are adults." I shouted.
"You are both 'adults' that are underage drinking." The sheriff said calmly.
"It's our bodies I don't even understand. It's literally a 4 oz. flask, no one can get drunk off of 4 oz, if you are sharing it with someone!" I watched as they led Travis over to one of the cop cars. They didn't stick him inside but they left him by the door, as he made a phone call. The sheriff tried to grab my arm and I jerked away.
"Don't touch me, I am capable of walking without you 'guiding' me." I snarled. He rolled his eyes but let me walk by myself.
They sat on the phone for twenty minutes. Travis kept sending me looks when I said something to aggravate the cops.
"Do you have a light? I could really use a one right about now." I heard Travis bust out laughing. He knew as well as I did; I didn't smoke.
He got mad and pushed Travis in the back slamming the door. "Come on, Dick. He was just laughing." He snarled and I laughed. He took my arm and put me in the same car as Travis, giving me a dirty look and and slamming the door.
"Man, he has no sense of humor." I looked over at Travis and he had a weird smile on his face as I laughed at myself.
"Your mom and dad are gonna kill us." Travis said, but he sounded amused.
"We should have ran." I said matter of factually. "They never would have knew."
"Are you okay?" He asked slightly concerned. I nodded and he chuckled. "You looked insane. Shouting and screaming at the po-po. They were trying to keep their calm."
"Well, wasn't that mighty polite of them. Was that before or after they slammed the cuffs on us like we were murderers?" He snickered.
"I think you're exaggerating."
"I think you flinched when they threw them on so I don't think so." I gave him my fakest grin and then we both started laughing.
"At least we have a story to tell our children." I said between snorts.
"Yeah, I don't know if they'd want to know how crazy their mom and dad was." He chuckled.
"I don't think they'd want to know about how you did absolutely nothing but watch me like I was insane." He grinned and looked out the window like he was hiding something.
"Here they come." He said.
I looked beyond him and out the window to see the two newbies coming this way, and the one who was mad earlier got into the car with us in it.
"We have to take you to the station like originally planned. Your parents will have to come get you both, and it seems there will be a five hundred dollar fine for both of you. You're lucky, sheriff Cal didn't mention the moonshine. There could've been possible jail time with both offenses." The five hundred dollar fine wasn't looking good before, but compared to jail time it looked magnificent.
"Mom is going to kill me." I heard Travis mutter. What I actually was concerned about was his dad. He was a lunatic, and five hundred dollars is a lot of money.
"Seems like we are gonna have to get another job." I told Travis. He nodded and I knew he was thinking about our last one.
"I heard Walmart is hiring." said James according to his name tag.
"Thanks, dick. We will take that into consideration." He shook his head and rolled his eyes, but I seen the smile coming onto his face.
