A little girl sat on a stool, her mother brushing her hair as she sat on the dark blue velvet seat. The mother sang the girl's sweet lullaby, soothing her with every stroke.

"Sunshine, gleam and glow

let your power shine,

make the clock reverse

bring back what once was mine,

what once was mine."

The girl turns to her mother, her green eyes longing.

"Why can't I go outside?"

"The outside world is a dangerous place, filled with horrible, selfish people." She tucks a strand of stray golden hair behind the young girl's ear. "Do you understand, my sunshine?"

"Yes, mummy."

Later that night, after Mother Garnet fell asleep, the little girl slips through the house and opens the window in the kitchen, staring out at the looming city of London.

If I ever escape, the girl thinks. That is where I'm going.
