~~~four years later~~~
Everyone was sitting in the Great Hall, patiently waiting for the seemingly neverending list of first-years to finish getting sorted. The names blurred into one another and Ella sighed and turned to Zinnia.
"What would they do if too many people got sorted into one of the houses and there weren't enough places for all of them?" She asked.
"They'd have to do something." Zinnia replied, leaning against the tables. "Hogwarts would find a way. They always find a way."
Professor McGonagall stood up and began a speech that was way too long, her shrill voice flooding the hall, and Zinnia zoned out before she reached the end, when a young woman stood up, tossing her curly dark hair, and when she smiled, her blood red lips was a deep contrast to her ivory skin and gleaming white teeth. She was perfect, in every way.
"Let us all welcome Professor Browne, who will be taking over the music programme from now on." Quiet, polite applause rippled throughout the room and Zinnia peered up at the new professor, who looked familiar. Like someone she had known before- an old friend. The woman sat back down and fanned out her robe- a deep, beautiful shade of purple- and it hit her. She knew who she was- how did she ever forget?
"We're home!" Zinnia twirled around, flopping back onto her bed and hiding under the blanket as the rest of her roommates filled into the room. A weight dropped onto her body and she squealed, shoving the lump off her body and emerging, her hair a tangled mess. (Tangled- get it?... I am so sorry.)
"Ella!" She laughed, rolling down onto the floor in a giant heap and pulling the messy-haired girl down with her.
"Are you sure you guys are fourteen?" Someone behind them asked. "Because you're acting like four-year-olds."
Zinnia rolled around and faced the party pooper, who came in the form of a girl with wavy red hair, brown eyes, and a little pink mouth that was currently twisted into a frown, although her eyes were twinkling with excitement.
"Have you ever heard of 'Young at heart,' Rose? Or is everyone you know just a middle-aged muggle in a child's body?"
"Have you ever met my dad?" Rose laughed, snapping open her trunk and pulling out a thick leather-bound book and leaned against her bed. Zinnia crawled back onto the bed, feeling the soft foamy mattress under her hands.
"Hey- are those schedules?" Ella crawled back on top of Zinnia and grabbed a scroll off Zinnia's bedside table, unravelling the brown paper to reveal the times and whatnot inside.
"You're taking music again?" Ella laughed.
"Shut up. I like the flute." Zinnia twisted around to look at Ella, reaching behind her to unclasp the
"Well good, because you have it right after breakfast tomorrow."
Zinnia, who was extremely familiar with where her flute sat in the classroom, was seated on the floor, assembling it when she felt a tap on her head.
"You do realise how many spit valves have been emptied on that floor, don't you dear?" A sharp tug on Zinnia's shoulder sent her jumping to her feet, whipping around to see who was speaking to her, although she knew that she already knew the answer.
"Mother?" She breathed. (Jesus Christ could I have made it any less creative?)
The woman smiled warmly, opening her arms wide.
"My dear, I've been so worried about you! For heaven's sake, child. Whatever made you do such a thing?" On she went, piling scoldings on top of sweet nicknames and fake tears. Zinnia, who had taken acting classes for years, knew the signs of the too-sweet, too rehearsed attitude that Zinnia too took on as well, embracing her mother happily, laughing into her shoulder.
Garnet stood back, holding her daughter's shoulders at arm's length and looking her up and down.
"Zinnia." Her face was suddenly stoic. "At the end of this year, I'm taking you back home."
