After a bit of negotiating on Nick's part, the two children left the shop with three robes each, a dress for Zinnia, and a shirt for Nick.

"How'd you do that?" Zinnia asked, nudging Nick with her shoulder.

"Charm," Nick smirked at Zinnia. "Something that you don't have."

Zinnia cast her eyes to the ground, kicking a stone.

"I don't like this."

"What?"

"Stealing."

Nick stopped.

"The train leaves soon. We should probably get going."

And so they made their way to King's Cross Station.

***

Zinnia was unaware that they were indeed going to King's Cross Station until they arrived. The large building seemed daunting to the girl who had only once seen the outside of her own house. More people than she could imagine bustled in and out of the doors. All the different sounds, faces, and colours flooded around her as Nick shoved his way through the crowds, pulling her behind him. Zinnia muttered apologies as she bumped into everyone, to preoccupied with not tripping down to notice that she passed through a brick wall until she looked up and saw the small crowds, the children in robes, and the giant steam train whistling up ahead on the lonely train track.

"Wow." Zinnia sighed, only just realizing that Nick had let go of her hand and had disappeared from her view. She turned in a full circle but could not see him. At that moment, a man in a uniform stepped off the train and blew a large whistle.

"Final call! All students on the express now or will  be left behind." Zinnia gasped and ran for the nearest door onto the train, catapulting onto the train, tripping over her feet and landing on her arm. Hard. A few snickers arose from the students still standing outside the booths. She got up, brushing herself off and striding forward, peeking into each booth for a vacancy or any sign of Nick, the only person she actually knew. Although she couldn't find the latter, she found a booth with a free seat and three other children already there. She sighed with relief at having a place to sit but cringed at the idea of having to sit next to people she didn't know, which she had never done before. Ever. She opened the door and poked her head around.

"Do you mind if I sit here? Everywhere else is full." Zinnia stuttered her way through the words, not noticing how equally nervous the other three kids looked.

"Sure." A boy shrugged casually, moving a grey cat off of the seat. The cat meowed at Pascall, who skulks into the booth, sniffing every corner of it, including the kids sitting around. Zinnia followed her cat inside the booth, sitting in the seat closest to the hallway. The awkward tension was building and the boy near the window was turning redder by the second.

"So!"  A girl with dark brown hair clapped her hands loudly, startling everyone just as the train lurched into motion.

Zinnia looked up from her lap, her eyes wide from shock, staring at the girl that so rudely interrupted the glorious awkward silence.

"My name is Ella." Everyone stared at her, waiting for something else to happen. She rolled her eyes. "Look, I'm not going to spend this entire trip in silence, ok? I'm too much of an extrovert for that."

Zinnia sighed but smiled sweetly at everyone.

"I'm Zinnia." She tucked a stray piece of golden hair behind her ear, looking at Ella for approval. Ella had large doe eyes that made her appear surprised at all times but her cropped hair and double piercing made her appear unapproachable, and Zinnia was a little bit scared to be near her. She kind of nodded but her eyes quickly turned to the boy next to her, who introduced himself as Liam. Liam had turquoise hair and hazel eyes that twinkled, and she didn't fully trust him, even though she had barely said a word to him. Another boy introduced himself, reluctantly, as Rowen, and his round pink cheeks were lightly streaked with tears that he wiped away profusely. Zinnia sighed contentedly and looked past Liam to watch the city melt into the countryside as a thousand emotions raced through her at a million miles per hour.
