“Ashton”, I say in a concerned way, “W-what happened?”
He takes a deep breath and lets out a sob, “T-the boy. He-he died and I-I started the fire. It’s my fault, Dawn”. His voice cracked at the last sentence. I feel pretty bad for Ashton. He believes it’s his fault the boy died. But really, it’s Mr. Pearson’s fault.
“Ash”, I calmly say, “it’s not your fault. You didn’t have to start the fire. He could’ve gotten someone else to light it. Even if you did light it, he pushed him into the fire so, it was Mr. Pearson’s fault”.
“Who’s Mr. Pearson?”, Ashton asks.
“He’s that bus driver guy. I don’t get a good vibe from him. He’s also the guy that pushed that boy into the fire”. By this time, I’m already close enough to Ashton to sit on his bed. So, I do.
“Y-you just don’t see things the way I do. If I didn’t light the fire, t-that guy wouldn’t have pushed him in. It’s my fault, Dawn I-I see your point b-but”, he started to get choked up and put his hands over his face and sobbed, “I-I don’t know what to do”.
“Come here”, I open my arms and he leans toward me. Ashton scoots closer and wraps his arms around me. It’s a little uncomfortable because we’re twelve, but I’ll do almost anything to make someone feel better. After that, I mumble soft things like it’s going to be okay, and shh, it’s not your fault.
What feels like about ten minutes from then, Ashton lifts his head and sniffles, “T-thank you, I feel better now”.
“If you have any more problems, just come wake me up or come get me if I’m not in training. I’m the only one in my cabin so, you won’t be disturbing anyone else. Okay?”.
“Okay. Thank you so much, Dawn. Don’t be surprised if I come in the middle of the night”, He laughs.
“I might be angry for a few minutes, but I’ll soften up after that”, I laugh. “Come on, let’s go to training. Are you up for it?”
He takes a deep breath, “Yeah. Yeah; I’m ready”
“Well then, let’s go!” I motion him over as I slowly jog towards the door.
“Allons-y!”, He exclaims.
“What?”
“It’s French. Michael will understand why I said that”, Ashton looks at me with an annoyed expression. Maybe it’s some nerd thing, but I wouldn’t know.
“Off to training! Stay out of trouble, Flame boy”, I look at him with a slight smile.
Ashton doesn’t look too pleased with that comment. Then, I realize that’s what I called him after he lit the fire. Oh, god, I think, I just made it worse.
Ashton narrows his eyes and they get teary again, “Why did you do that, Dawn? You called me that when-”
I cut him off with a hug, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to”. I put my hands on his shoulders and look him in the eyes, “Forgive me?”
“Yeah, okay”.
“Well, I have to go train for whatever I’m supposed to do”.
“I’ll see you later, Dawn. Good luck!”
“Ash, you’re the one who needs it”.
“Well, I’m wishing you good luck anyway”.
I wave goodbye and walk over to my training field.
There, I see an annoyed-looking, middle-aged man standing in the middle of the dirt field. He’s dressed in black and white, too. He’s a Quo master isn’t he? I think. I jog to reach him and to start my training.
“What took you so long? I’ve been waiting for you for about thirty minutes. What were you doing?”, says the man. He has styled brown hair that sticks up in the front. It looks sort of spiky with lots of texture. The man has a scruffy beard and eyes the color of dark chocolate. Did I mention the accent? Yes, the man has a British accent which just makes him seem even more fabulous.
“I-I was helping a friend with hi-their problem and, thirty minutes? I thought it was only five or ten minutes. It felt short! How was it-”
“You’ve got MoQTTD. Master of Quo Time Telling Disorder. Happens with Ninety-five percent of Quo Masters. I wasn’t surprised you have it”, He says with ease and pride.
“So, youre a Master of Quo, too, right?”, I ask the man whose name is unknown so far.
“Why would I be your trainer, if I wasn’t. Yes, I’m your trainer for battle and other stuff”.
“Battle? What? But, what is MoQTD?”
“It’s called MoQTTDnot whatever you just said. But it’s when you think that, let’s say, an hour has passed but it’s really five hours, vice versa. You’ve felt that before? Everyone does, but Masters of Quo have it lots more than usual. An older Quo Master usually has their powers under control so, they don’t have it as much”, says the very good-looking middle-aged man. No, I’m not attracted to him but, he look a lot better than most middle-aged men.
“Okay… by the way, you never actually told me your name. What is it?” I ask.
“David, and you?”
“Dawn”.
“Very nice well we better get started on your time controlling stuff and to choosing your weapon to use. I use a sword but, you don’t have to. We use lots of different weapons and potions. We’ll get into deeper details later but for now, lets get your powers under control”.
