Marshall pulls into the carpark behind the studio and glances at his phone again, Chloe got him like a teenage girl, constantly wanting the validation of her contact. Nothing flashes on his screen but the time and a photo of his girls. He exhales heavily, annoyed at himself but this time without the usual self-doubting voices, they were weirdly quiet this time, he knew he was gonna see her again and he didn’t feel the need to worry she would see through him to his fucked-up core.

With his hand on the door handle he takes a moment to contemplate this, it had been forever since he hadn’t heard the self-critique, the sneering mocking tone of his biggest tormenter, his phone buzzes and he sees her name light it up,he smiles even though he didn’t need the reassurance.

^Im sure that was fun^

He chuckles, imagining the smirk that would be on her face as she references his interrogation with Kim.

*Oh yeah, you missed the best bit. Anyone else wouldn’t have mattered*

^Oh so that’s happened before?^

*No, very few people get to see my girls*

^To be fair I only met the eldest^

Without thinking he replies

*Then come round tonight and meet Hailie*

His phone stays silent, the quick beat of her replies has stopped and he is suddenly reminded of their situation, here he is treating her like they are together and she doesn’t have a husband back in Australia. As he is typing a retraction her response comes through

^I would love that^

He grins, may as well do what he does best, repression one of his finest moves.

Chloe looks down at her phone again, grinning herself and without knowing it following Marshall’s famous move to a tee.

Chris had called twice already but she had dodged the calls, for the first time in years her whole body was buzzing she felt as light as air.

“Must be liking the new job Chloe”
Her colegue Robyn strolls over, remarking on her smile.

“Robyn, hi, I am its fantastic”
Chloe tries to dial back her beam to a grin so she doesn’t look like a complete psychopath.

“Well I hear you are doing an incredible job, I must say I am a big fan of Rich’s work, I studied her in college”

Chloe puts her final papers into her briefcase,

“Oh yeah? She did some incredible works”

Robyn nods in agreement as Chloe clicks her case shut.

“So listen some of the faculty are going out tonight for some drinks you should join”

“Oh I would love too but I have dinner plans”

“Your husband over for a visit?”
So much for repression,

“No, an old friend from when I went to school here, I haven’t seen her in years”

She had no idea why she had to lie about the gender, she didn’t owe this lady anything and she had no connection to anyone back home to blow her cover but perhaps that was just going to be the guilty default now.
