Chapter 3:

**Emily's POV**

I sit here at my desk in my math class with Mr. Wells and the whole time he keeps staring at me, and I mean the teacher. He does this every now and then and it kinda bothers me so I try not to look at him. He's always been a really creepy teacher since the first day of school. I absolutely hate it but I try not to let it bother me so instead I look over at Luke who's sitting on the other side of the room just casually doodling in his notebook. I tap the side of my binder rapidly waiting for the bell to ring. I'm sitting at my desk alone now because our stupid teacher moved Michael to the back of the room for constantly talking to me and "distracting" me. Finally the bell rings and I pick up my things and run out the door as fast as I can. Michael catches up with me and so does Luke. I've been able to keep myself pretty calm around Luke now since he's been coming over to my house for band practice a lot more over the month. They have their first performance today at our school's rally after school. I can't wait to watch them. They've been becoming a really good band lately and I've been enjoying their music a lot.

I take a seat at a picnic table outside the cafeteria. The weather is pretty hot today and honestly I love the hot weather. Cold weather just hasn't ever been my thing.

"I'll be right back, guys," Michael says as he rushes off to the cafeteria to buy his lunch. Me and Luke awkwardly shy away from talking to each other and take out lunches from our backpacks. Luke looks at me for a second and then back down to his lunch he brought. I feel a hand on my back and then I realize it's just Ashton. He has one hand on my shoulder and the other twirling a drumstick.

"Hey how was class?" Ash asks us with a cheerful smile.

"It was good. Our math teacher is really creepy and weird though," Luke says with a chuckle.

"Yeah you two have Mr. Wells right? I had him last year for Algebra 2. He's really weird and keeps to himself a lot," Ashton says and sits down next to me.

"Yeah some days he's really cheerful and creepy and other days he's creepy and moody. Just can't get around it all," I say and laugh a little. Luke nods in agreement and we laugh a bit. Calum sits down next to Luke and joins us finally.

"Hey," Calum says and takes a bite of the slice pizza he bought for lunch.

"Where the hell did Michael go? The lunch line couldn't have been that long," I say.

"I just saw him in there. He should be out by now," Calum says in between bites. I nod and take another bite out of my sandwich. Finally I see Michael pushing his way out of the cafeteria and then he starts running over to us.

"Fuck, I thought I'd never get out of there," Michael says and sits down next to Ashton.

"Was it crowded in there?" Ashton asks him.

"There was a fight so everyone was crowding around the guys who were fighting and I was getting squished in between people who were trying to watch. I was trying to get out of there so I didn't get killed by either of the guys fighting. It's crazy in there," Michael says with pure relief on his face that he's finally out of the cafeteria.

"Our first show is today!" Ashton says with excitement.

"We're only playing two songs, that's it," Calum says sarcastically.

"But it's kinda like our first real gig though," Luke says.

"Pretty soon we'll see our name in lights '5 Seconds of Summer at Madison Square Garden, SOLD OUT'. Wouldn't that be perfect?" Ashton says and pretends to hold up a sign saying those words. We all laugh at him because we all know they have a long way to go before they reach that point.
