Steve, Natasha, Wanda, Vision, Rhodes, Sam and Banner walked off the jet and came face to face with T'Challa, Okoye and the entire Dora Milaje. Bucky watched from the distance, adjusting to his new arm, wondering how he could face all these people when each of them knew that he had not been able to protect Ophelia. In particular, he studied Sam, knowing that the man hated him to begin with, and had even less of a reason to even give him the time of day.
"You have the King's Guard, the Dora Milaje and..." T'Challa was saying.
Bucky stepped into sight. "A semi-stable hundred-year-old man."
Steve lit up when he saw his friend, fully intact with an arm that didn't scream HYDRA. He looked well, with colour in his face, a smile on his lips. Steve walked over to his best friend, embracing him. "How you been, Buck?" he asked.
"Not bad, for the end of the world," Bucky quipped.
"That's not what I meant," Steve said, sad to bring up the obvious, but glad it wasn't Bucky's first thought. It was clear he was recovering. Though Steve didn't know how long he had been out of Cryo, he presumed it was a while now.
"I miss her every day," Bucky admitted, although it was hardly worthy of admission because of how obvious it was. How could he not? "But I'm okay."
"You look well," Steve said. "The arm, it suits you."
He smiled, then looked up at the blue skies above them. "I'm glad she isn't here for this. This would have broken her."
"She would have been a worthy addition to fight at our side," Steve added. "But you're right, she never would have wanted to see what this is coming to. Stark is gone, Thanos is coming, this may be the end of our world."
"I thought my world ended when she died." Bucky half-smiled. "But here we are."
"You sound as though you're ready for it," Steve noted.
"I am," he said. "I've always been ready for this, and without her, I guess even more so."
"Don't talk like that."
Bucky glanced at Steve, cocked his head to the side. "You and O would have been good friends, you know?"
"We were," Steve replied.
