Chapter Nine: Trying out New Weapons
Lexi’s POV
“CANNONBALL,” Ris screams before launching herself of the rope and landing in the water with her knees tucked into her chest. A giant wave of water soaked me and Ris came bobbing up with a grin plastered on her face.
“9 out of 10.” I say while treading in the lake water.
“WHAT ONLY A NINE”
“You kinda hesitated before you let go. If you hadn’t you really could of got some air.” She splashes me with her newly found water powers. Now I know why her parents never let me take her swimming. I splash her the old fashioned way back. A huge wave falls on me in return making me dip under the water momentarily. I cough out, “Truce, truce.” Ris looks satisfied.
Our banter is interrupted by a group of obnoxious boys as they run to the lake side and push each other into the dark blue water. I recognize Sean’s blonde hair as he pushes a blacked hair boy into the lake.
“Umm lets go to the other side or go do somethin’ else.” Ris noticed my discomfort and says,
“Okay lets go check out the dueling arena.” I let out a breath of relief. We swim to the dock that the boys aren’t by and climb out. We dry off and put our clothes on. I slip my feet into my white flip flops and link arms with Ris as we walk to the general direction of the dueling area.
About 20 minutes later. We stumble onto the area where pairs of teenagers wielded swords against each other. I nearly smack myself when I realize,
“Ris! We dont have any weapons!” She smacks her forehead and thinks for a second before marching up to an older looking brown haired boy and asking,
“Excuse but we are new and don’t know where to get a sword. Can you point us in the right direction?” Her looks up and replies,
“The shed next to the Athena cabin or if none of those work visit the Hephaestus kids.”
“Thank you,” I call out before turning a heel and walking towards the cabins.
“No problem.” He yells at our already disappearing backs.
We finally reach the shed and open the door to see swords, knives, bows, and a lot of weird junk.
Delightful.
I stroll over to the swords and hold each one. None of them are quite until I find a longer but lighter sword. The tip of the blade curves slightly up and “λάμψη” is inscribed on the bronze blade. “Radiance” I whisper, my mind translating the foreign but not so foreign language. I hear a clatter of metal and the sword tumbles out my hand and i look up to scold Rissa. She gives me a look that says sorry so I return my attention to the sword, only its not a sword anymore. Its a bronze cuff with the same inscription but also a iris engraved on either side. I heard of magical items and I concluded that this must be one of them. I also heard that some would return to you if you lost them, so I toss it onto a table on the other side of the shed. Ris gives me a weird look but I ignore it.
I walk to some other knives to look at when I feel the cool bronze encircle my wrist.
“Oh my gods it worked!”
“What worked?”
“The bracelet sword thingy came back to me after I threw it!”
“Awesome! I wish mine did that.” She holds up a wider sword with a straight tip unlike my curved one. She hands me the blade so I can look more into detail on it. On the flat of the blade “παλιρροϊκό κύμα” is engraved. “It’s called Tidal Wave! Isn’t that cool!”
