Chapter Two: Substitutes and Monsters

Chapter Two:

Percy’s POV

My celestial bronze sword slices through the last Telekhine and Hazel was right beside wielding her gold spatha. We were on the trail of a highly dangerous monster for Chiron. We were chasing her in Brooklyn when we were ambushed by Telekhines. Frank ran ahead to try and follow her but must have failed because he came running back to us in human form. “Where did she go?” I ask my voice straining. This she monster has been kidnapping and killing children and we needed to stop her before it happened again. She has already taken 4 children and the mortals found their bodies in ditches and allies, completely drained of blood. Frank ran his hand through his hair and tells us,

“She ran into some abandoned warehouse.”

“Well, come on then! We have to catch her before she kills someone else.” Hazel says before running in the direction Frank came from. Frank gave me a look and I just shrugged and ran after Hazel.

Marissa’s POV

My day passed in a blur, math, science, home economics, language arts, and art. Finally though I could go to my homeroom class with Lexi. After homeroom we had lunch and then I had my half and hour of detention. I walk in to the class and after seeing there was only Lexi and a few other students in the class, I yell “Honey I’m home!” I get a few weird looks from the other students but Lexi is laughing at my stupidness. I smile and walk over to my seat across from Lexi.

“Soo how was your day?” She asks.

“Horrible! I got detention from that weird substitute is History. We might have to delay that shopping trip.” I say while flipping my pencil in my fingers. Being ADHD can really suck sometimes, ”I’m sorry,” I say giving her my pleading gray-eyed puppydog face. She looks like she wants to be mad but gives into my super adorable puppydog face.

“Fine!” she finally yells, “But you owe me skittles.” she says while throwing a small piece of wadded up paper at me. It hits me in the shoulder and I dramatically clutch my wound saying, “I’VE BEEN SHOT! HELP ME SOMEONE!” Lexi giggles and throws another at me. This time I throw one right back and soon we have a war on our hands. The teacher yells, “Miss Jackson and Miss Colburn please stop this childness right now and pick up your mess.”

“Yes ma'am,” I  say not wanting to get another detention. I kneel on the floor and pick up all our pieces of paper we threw. Lexi does the same by her desk. We finish and I throw away the paper.

Thirty minutes later the bell rings and everyone grabs their stuff and goes to their lockers. “Meet you in our usually spot.” I shout at Lexi. She doesn’t respond and I go to my locker and then to the lunch room. Middle school lunchrooms are generally chaotic but the lunchroom at Maximum Middle School is World War III. People are throwing food, shouting across the room, and a few boys are even passing around a football. I push my way through the chaos to where Lexi and I normally sit. There are a few of our other friends already there, including the new kid. I wait patiently for Lexi while eating my chocolate bar before anything else.

I jump in surprise when someone pokes me in the side. I flip around only to come face to face with the blue eyes of Conan. Conan is my neighbor and I have known him since weve moved here about 5 years ago. I roll my eyes and poke him back, he slides into the seat next to me and asks,

“Whatcha doing Seagirl?”

“Eating what does it look like I'm doing?” I reply while stuffing my face with the last of the chocolate.  

"I don't know what to call that." Conan says smirking. I punch him the arm and he nearly falls off the bench. I do have a hard hit.

“If you two would stop your flirting so we can eat and Conan get out of my seat.” I hear Lexi say behind me.

“Sorry Co im kicking you out.” I tell him. Conan gasps,

“I thought we were friends Ris.” he says feigning fake betrayal.

“OUT” Lexi commands again.

“Ok ok don’t get your rainbows in a twist.” Conan says defeated. He gets up and Lexi slides into his seat. We talk and I hear all the gossip about the substitute. I sigh when I hear that no one else got detention.

“My mom is gonna freak when she hears I got detention.” My mom picked me up everyday in the school parking lot and will probably think I had been kidnapped. We finish our lunch and soon the bell goes off and school is out. I make my way to my locker and then to the history room where Ms. Whatever is waiting.

Percy’s POV

The warehouse is boring and dirty, everything is gray and dusty. Hazel sneezes and I absentmindedly say “Gods bless you.” I hear a rustle behind me and I flip around and see the rustle came from a pile of cardboard boxes. I walk over cautiously and poke the pile with my sword. A woman bursts out and claws her way to my neck. I turn just in time and she falls onto the floor where I was standing. She has blonde hair and a snake for the lower half of her body. Her upper half is covered by a flowy tanktop. Her tail sneaks it way towards Hazel. Frank sees this and morphs into a lion, slashing at the woman’s tail. She hisses and lashes out at Frank. This time Hazel is there bringing her spatha down, cutting off the tip of her tail. The woman howls in pain and shouts,            “Gaea curses you filthy demigod scum! Oh wait she already did,” My blood boils at that name. How does she know about the curse? I swing Riptide aiming to cut off her head, but she is too fast.  Her menacing laughter fills the warehouse and I move to try and thrust my sword through her heart. This time I scrap the side of her ribs and she lungs at me. I turn and slash at her chest as it spirals past me. It hits her and gold monster dust starts to pour out. She lands on the floor and I stab her in the stomach. She laughs and with her dying breaths say, “Gaea will have your daughter’s life. Run run little demigod, go save your daughter, you will only be delaying her death.” And with that she disintegrates into golden dust. I fall down onto my knees in shock. Hazel and Frank run over asking if i’m alright and I can only gasp,

“Marissa.”

****Sorry this was a kinda boring chapter... I made it more exciting toward the end though. Hope you all are enjoying the story and I promise the next chapter is when the action starts.
